It’s National Cheesecake Day!

National Cheesecake Day. A national, unofficial “holiday” that beckons for you to eat food?! Yes, please!! And yes, dessert, to me, is an individualized food group. Although, I, for one, would like the day to indulge in a variety of decadent cheesecake-esque desserts while my job pays me to, I will observe the “holiday” on Sunday (or maybe throughout the week….in moderation, of course, ahem).

As if this “holiday” wasn’t appropriately placed to help me temporarily ward off any stress that I may be experiencing, it also has historical roots in a certain major, international event! In conducting my “research”, I came across this tid-bit (chiff.com): “Records of cheesecake date as far back as 770 BC, when the dessert, or something like it at least, was served to Olympic athletes.” And there it is! What better way to prolong the cheesecake festivities than to honor its outstanding tradition?! No, I am not pulling at strings, but I may be rationalizing how I can convince my husband that it is okay to have cheesecake frequently over the next few weeks.

Cheesecake and I had a tumultuous relationship when I was younger. As a child, and even into my early 20’s, I could not understand the hype of the dessert and would often gag at its sight. The thought of cheese, in general, was repulsive, for the most part. I was not fond of other cheese-related foods as well, such as pizza and raviolis. Cheese was just a food group that I preferred to have minimal consumption, or exposure, to. Now that I shared that tidbit with the world, I can move on….

I can remember when that all changed: I was 23. For some unknown reason, I decided to have a “bite” of the dessert after a friend begged me to try a piece. My friend had baked a cheesecake for a gathering and although she is an amazing baker, and we both knew that the dessert would be amazing, I gave into my fear. From that moment on, I never looked back. There are times, such as during my pregnancy, that I crave cheesecake. The Cheesecake Factory has become one of my favorite places to order from. In all honesty, I do try to bake and be domesticated – but it just isn’t in me to serve an edible dish. I can do Calculus, just don’t ask me to bake or cook. The Cheesecake Factory has an amazing assortment of the dessert and can accommodate most cravings. My favorite, by far, is the Tiramisu Cheesecake. Thank goodness for bakeries and places that can cater to specific foods!

No matter what your preference in cheesecake – albeit the myriad of varieties available to satisfy your palette – celebrate and enjoy the holiday with your closest ones! Originally being from the NY/NJ area, I am a lover of the true NY style, but, I will nibble on any kind! Just thinking about the fluffiness and creaminess is making me very hungry….

I will be throwing out the old adage, “Once on the lips, forever on the hips”, and taking out my fork in observance of the cheesecake. What will you be doing?

I’ll be having a lovely slice of cheesecake in appreciation of the day it is. (Any excuse) I used to tell my daughter that she wouldn’t like Cheesecake because she didn’t like cheese.(So I could enjoy this treat alone…..how sad) She fell for it too. Now I’ve told her the truth she still doesn’t eat it. Thanks for reminding me now I’m off to the shop to get the biggest…….
