So after a long day at work, you enjoy a nice glass of wine. Who doesn’t enjoy a nice glass here or there? Although I hated wine when I first tried it, wine has really grown on me and I now enjoy a small glass every once and a while. Research has shown that for women a 4-ounce serving a day could have you reaping some of the benefits that wine has to offer.
There are antioxidants called flavonoids found in the seeds and skin of grapes. These flavonoids are known to reduce the risk of coronary heart disease. Flavonoids are known to reduce the forming of blood clots. It also reduces the production low-density lipoprotein, which is called “bad cholesterol” and boosting the production of high density lipoprotein which is known as the “good cholesterol.” Recent studies also have proven that a moderate intake of wine can help prevent the forming of tumors in some cancers and even help aid the formation of nerve endings which scientist believe can help in the treatment of diseases like Alzheimer’s. Research is continuing to be done on this area so keep your eyes peeled for new findings.
So, does this mean that you should go out and drink glass upon glass of wine? NO IT DOES NOT. If you don’t drink at all, then don’t start! But if you do drink, the best wines for your health are Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Syrah and Pinot Noir. Red wines have more flavonoids than white wines. All alcohol should be consumed in moderation. If you enjoy a glass every once and a while, it is beneficial to have a small 4 ounce serving daily. If you do not drink, you do not need to start in order to help prevent heart disease, but who doesn’t need a good reason to enjoy a nice glass of wine every once in a while?
