I can think of very few shows on television that do not have at least one character I despise. Sometimes it’s because the writers have obviously designated a character for everyone to hate on. Other times, I have one I personally can’t stand (I’m thinking Penny from Big Bang Theory). Here’s a list of some characters I think we can all agree we love to hate.
Rachel Berry (Glee)
Rachel is such a conundrum because even though she’s one of the “good” guys, her constant striving for perfection and stardom get on your nerves. Plus, she can kind of be a bully. Remember Season 1 & 2 when Sunshine the exchange student from the Philippines arrives? Rachel is quickly threatened by her talent and “accidentally” sends her to a crack house instead of to auditions. We love to hate Rachel because of her obsession with stardom, but still ultimately root her on because she is part of the original Glee Club kids.
Cathy from Candy Apples Dance Center (Dance Moms)
Everyone loves a good rivalry, and Cathy gives the show just that. She has a high-pitched voice always ready with snippy remarks, and a new team of handpicked boys to continually go head-to-head with Abby’s girls. Although Cathy isn’t a fictional character like the others on this list, there’s no one I love to hate more from the charades of reality television. She’s always conniving and trying to knock the ALDC girls off their game, especially Maddie. Cathy even tried to crash the girls’ break from dance when they went to the skating rink. Anytime is a good time for a little intimidation and big talk.
Tracey Jordan (30 Rock)
After three seasons, I stopped wishing for him to not make me want to change the channel. I feel for both Jenna and Liz that such a buffoon hijacked their original show! He’s just ridiculous. We love to hate Tracey because as annoying as he is, 30 Rock wouldn’t be the same without him. Who else would constantly make Liz Lemon roll her eyes? Who else would draw Kenneth into weird scenarios like pretending to be married to Tracey’s wife, Angie? No one else could do that. Plus, I like Dot Com and Grizz, and you don’t get Tracey’s groupies without Tracey.
Councilman Jamm (Parks and Recreation)
Jamm is an example of one of those characters we’re supposed to hate. No one else in the Parks and Recreation Department likes him either. It’s no wonder though, because when he’s not self-promoting for his dental practice, he’s trying to make sneaky deals. He even admits that his word is garbage! He cannot be trusted. However, it is fun to watch Lesley get her feathers ruffled every now and again. Also, I do love to count how many times he says some variation of “You’ve been Jammed!”
Shawn Spencer (Psych)
Shawn and Gus have one of those friendships that I don’t think I’ll ever understand. Gus is smooth and levelheaded. Shawn is sometimes too quirky and impulsive for his own good. I get so frustrated with him, usually at the same time that Gus is rolling his eyes. Then again, Shawn doesn’t care if you like him. He’s a legend in his own mind. Even though he gets a little cocky, there’s no way the show could exist without him.
