Hollywood brings back the fangs with ‘Vampire Academy: Blood Sisters.’

Look out, Hollywood, you’re about to get bit by the undead…again.

But Vampire Academy: Blood Sisters is no Twilight. Sure, there’s some forbidden romance, evil-eyed villans and, of course, a rather enthusiastic army of fans, but that’s about as far as the two tales can be compared. And after many starts, the movie has begun filming in London and is set to reach theaters Feb.14, 2014.

The story, written by Richelle Mead in her Vampire Academy novels, follows the life of Dhampir (a.k.a. fancy word for pumped-up bodyguard) teen Rose Hathaway as she trains to become the guardian for her best friend, a Moroi (a.k.a. the good vampires) Lissa Dragomir. While in the process of learning how to defeat Strigoi (a.k.a. the evil vampires. Keeping up?) during her time at St. Vladimir’s Academy, Rose falls for her hot, Russian instructor Dimitri Belikov.

Penned by Daniel Waters and directed by his brother, Mean Girls alum Mark Waters, Vampire Academy: Blood Sisters will star Zoey Deutch (Beautiful Creatures, Ringer) as the strong-willed Rose, Lucy Fry as the sweet Lissa and Danila Kozlovsky as the hunk-tastic Eastern European Dimitri.

Mead, who has had little involvement in the film beyond advisory information, has given the script a thumbs up, saying that she had prepared herself for some major changes.

“But I was astonished the first time I read it. I was like, this is it. They hit all the main points. They got the humor,” she said in a recent interview with MTV’s Hollywood Crush. “There’s nothing I can really think of that’s a radical deviation from the book, which is just amazing to me.”

What do you think, Vampire Academy fans? Are you excited to see the books come to life? And did they pick the right actors for the roles?

  1. Interesting. I hadn’t heard of the book series before now, but I’m always game for non-Twilightcloned vampire stories to get attention. I will definitely be keeping an eye on this.
