Most look forward to the usual suspects at the start of a new year: a clean slate, a chance to follow through on New Year’s resolutions for once and time to take a breather after the hectic holidays. For pop-culture junkies, the new year marks the end of the holiday season and the exciting beginning of another – award season!
This is music’s biggest night, with breakout artists like Lorde to old favorites like David Bowie nominated. But let’s be real, we’re all excited to watch just to see if Beyoncé pops up out of nowhere and steals the show. She’s so sneaky, that Beyoncé.
The Golden Globes
This is the fun award show for attendees. Before every commercial break, the camera pans over a crowd of celebrities drinking and mingling with old pals (old also famous pals, obviously). With so much “fun” being had, there tends to be some rather interesting acceptance speeches by the end of the night. Also, Amy Poehler and Tina Fey are co-hosting the show for the second time. If that isn’t ‘nuff said, then we can’t be friends anymore.
The Screen Actor’s Guild Awards
The SAG. Awards feel a bit strange upon first viewing; it’s a stark contrast to most award shows, as they feature no host or musical acts, and air on a random, non-basic cable channel. Still, a seemingly bare affair has its perks. With all of the excess entertainment cut out, there’s more time for the stars accept their awards without the fear that the Jaws theme song will begin threatening them off the stage.
The British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards
Did you have no idea what BAFTA stood for before this very moment? Same here! This ceremony honors some of Britain’s (and the rest of the globe’s) finest. And of course, we pop culture junkies can’t resist the Brits. It’s the night for Anglophiles to unite!
The Academy Awards
With every film award ceremony, the dress trains get longer and longer. By the time we reach this final stop, said trains are practically longer than the show’s massive runtime. So, when even the most avid of award show lovers start to feel the award season fatigue setting in, they can still look forward to oohing and ahhing over the red carpet pre-show fluff (which never gets old). Viewer tip: since internet sweetheart Jennifer Lawrence seems likely to pay another visit to the Oscars this year, it’s best to watch the show live before Tumblr starts GIFing it from top to bottom.
Pretty soon, the season to be jolly will come to a close. But fear not! The season to watch people in shiny dresses get shinier statuettes is just around the bend.
