The story of Amy Pond may have ended on Doctor Who, but it seems as though portrayer Karen Gillan’s career is just getting started.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, she has signed on to star in the pilot of ABC’s new single-camera sitcom, Selfie. The show, from the mind of Suburgatory creator Emily Kapnek, puts a modern twist on My Fair Lady. The story will follow the life of Eliza Dooley (Gillan), a young woman who is more concerned with her online persona than her real life (and let’s face it, we all know an “Eliza Dooley”). When she gains notoriety from a break-up turned viral video, she recruits a marketing expert to help resuscitate her image.
Whovians already know about Karen’s stellar comedic skills from Amy Pond’s days of poking fun of her Raggedy Man and Mr. Pond in Doctor Who (not to mention her wacky yet endearing real life persona). Now, she’ll have the chance to show off her chops to a new American audience – or, at least those who have never tuned in to BBC America before. For the fans who already know and love her, though, two all-important questions remain: Will she keep her Scottish accent for her new role? And will she still have red hair? The answers to such hard-hitting questions will have to wait, it seems.
Before Selfie premieres, fans can see Karen in the upcoming horror flick Oculus or watch her presumably kick some butt as villainess Nebula in Guardians of the Galaxy this summer.
