Did Tatiana Maslany deserve an Emmy? In the voice of Sarah Manning my answer to that question would have to be, “You’re damn right!” On Thursday, July 10 the Emmy nominations were announced. While I was beyond thrilled with the majority of the comedy categories, I was enraged with the drama ones.
Best Actress in a Comedy Series was one of the only categories I fully agreed with this year. Taylor Schilling is phenomenal on Orange is the New Black and gives such a raw and sensational performance as Piper Chapman. She would have to be one of my top picks to win. Julia Louis-Dreyfus makes me laugh until I cry week after week on Veep, and will probable take home the win again this year. Amy Poehler is my absolute favorite person nominated though, so I am really hoping she wins. This is coincidentally, Poehler’s 12th nomination. She’s never won and it would be so incredible to see her receive the highest praise for her exceptional work on Parks and Recreation. As for Best Actor in a Comedy Series, I would be very pleased if William H. Macy of Shameless won this. As amazing as Jim Parsons is I think he’s getting a little tired of coming up with more thank you speeches. It would be nice to see someone new with this year!
As for Lead Actress in a Drama Series, well, I think they are all extremely talented but I think the Emmy association could have nominated a couple more people who were extremely deserving. I would have loved to see the brilliant and talented, Tatiana Maslany nominated. In all honesty, she could have taken every spot in that category and I would have been okay with that, one nomination for each character. Also for Supporting Actor in a Drama Series, Bellamy Young. What?! How could the association over look Tatiana and Bellamy? I don’t understand how their heart wrenching performances were overlooked. Hopefully next year they get the praise they deserve. But with who was nominated I think Lizzy Caplan from Masters of Sex is the best choice. As for Best Supporting Actress, Lena Headey. She’s wonderful on Game of Thrones and it would be great to see her take it home. Two people I think should win Best Actor in a Drama Series and Best Supporting Actor, Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul. They need to win these together. I think it’s only fair.
Tony Hale is one of my absolute favorite actors working today; I really hope he takes home the supporting actor in a comedy series win. He deserves an Emmy just for the scene he did on the floor of the bathroom in the first half of the Veep finale.
As for the Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy, it’s no surprise to anyone who read my OITNB piece, or to anyone that has talked to me for more than five minutes, that I love OITNB. You can imagine how beyond delighted to see the show receive so many nominations. Kate Mulgrew would have to be my top pick; I would also love to see Anna Chlumsky take it home. No one can swear that effortlessly on TV and make it look both hysterical and affirmative. She’s the best! I don’t think she’ll win but Kate Mckinnon is probably one of the best performers of the year, I was really happy to see her even get nominated. Her impressions are on point and she really stepped up as one of the lead cast members this year on Saturday Night Live. As for Guest Actress in a Comedy, it’s almost impossible for me to choose which actress should win Best Guest Actress, I would love to see any of them get it, although I think Uzo Aduba may have this one in the bag.
For the top honors of the night, Best Comedy should 100 percent go to the Jenji Johan masterpiece Orange is the New Black, no question. Best Drama series should go to Breaking Bad or House of Cards. Breaking Bad will most likely take this home one last time, and rightfully should!
Well, now that I have ranted about how the Emmy association got it all wrong and got some of it really right I will end on this note. I think Seth Meyers will do a fantastic job hosting the Emmys on August 25. I think the show will be one of the best yet and will shine the spotlight on of the fresh faces from this year in television. And please, let’s all agree to nominate Tatiana next year, and maybe even every year after that.
Here are my picks for the night’s big winners (and who I think the awards should go to)!
