One of the best feelings is when you leave the hair salon with your locks flowing, highlights glistening, and looking like a brand new you. Unfortunately, that feeling can be short lived if you don’t take the appropriate steps to care for your new hair color. Check out these products & tips before you let the sun get the best of your hair.
Sulfate Free Shampoo
Say goodbye to sulfate, and hello to au natural shampoo and conditioner. My personal favorite is the OGX line because of its wide variety. Whether you prefer argan oil, seaweed extract or coconut oil, their products keep your hair healthy and vibrant — which is vital to long lasting hair color. Sulfate strips the color in your hair, so whether you choose OGX or other natural products, always say no to sulfate!
UV Protecting Sprays
Redken makes one of the best UV protecting sprays I’ve tried so far. This spray protects the hair from damaging sunrays that ruin both the color and health of your hair. For best results, spray the UV spray in your hair before you spend time in the sun, and if possible keep in a beach bag for the days you’re spending any extra under it’s rays. The sun is one of the most damaging influences to both light and dark hair, so be sure to keep this product close by in the warmer months!
Wash Less, Dry Shampoo More
We all do it — go an extra day (or two) without washing our hair. The thing is, going a few days (depending on the thickness of your hair) without a wash is actually very healthy for your hair. My hair stylist told me her secret to shiny and long hair is going a few days a week without washing her hair with shampoo, and just conditioning it, followed by air drying. Call it taboo, but the technique will help your hair color last longer and keep your hair looking smoother and healthier.
Buy a New Hat
Yes, you can thank your “hat hair” for saving your new hair color. Again, the sun is not always your friend and by protecting your hair from sun exposure, you are locking your new color into each strand. Next time you’re out in the sun, grab a cute hat and do your damn thang. Your skin and hair will thank you later on.
“Healthy hair is happy hair” — I read that in the bathroom of a hair salon once. As cheesy as that may sound, there’s some truth in it. The healthier your hair is, the better it is going to look. No one likes the appearance of dry, brittle hair, so find a deep conditioner that works with your hair texture and start moisturizing! Recently, I fell in love with Kerastase Deep Conditioning Mask. Within my first use, I noticed a difference in the appearance of my hair.
Imagine hair so smooth you feel like you’ve walked out of a Pantene Pro-V commercial. Seems impossible, right? Luckily, there are products beyond Pantene that will help keep your hair shiny and smooth.
