Celebrity Crush: Michael Cera

I first saw Superbad when I was 13. I loved it, but as I got older I kept telling myself I’d see a different, more serious movie that would knock my socks off and turn my loving Superbad into a forgotten phase of my youth… I’m 19 now, and it’s still my favorite movie. And I’ve come to realize this is mostly due to the beautiful and wonderfully talented Michael Cera.

For years, I have been unable to admit this. I’ve always told people Leonardo DiCaprio was my favorite actor. There was just something about Superbad and Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist that made me regard them as less legitimate than other movies. Like the ones Leo starred in.

However, while I still like DiCaprio’s work A LOT, I’ve come a long way in my adolescent partialities.

No longer am I afraid to admit that Superbad is my watch-when-I’m-sad movie, or that Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist makes me tingle with warm happiness inside – it’s like drinking hot chocolate.

And if you’ve ever seen either of those films, you know that Michael Cera has a huge effect on the atmosphere created in them. His sense of comedic timing and ability to create such an endearing, albeit awkward, teenaged character is undoubtedly impressive. I’ve realized that he is one of the biggest reasons I love re-watching these movies and showing them to my friends.

So, truly, I think of this article as a proclamation – nay, a confession – of my love for Michael Cera. I’m finally admitting it to the world!

And with my admittance, I’ve come to look more into his work.

Lately, he’s been pursuing different kinds of roles. He’s shying away from his shy, nice-guy “type” and is stretching himself. This can be seen in the movies, Magic Magic and Crystal Fairy & the Magical Cactus, as well as in his portrayal of himself in This is the End.

He has published a hilarious recount of having an 8 month-long text-conversation with a random number to The New Yorker.

He even starred on Broadway in Kenneth Lonergan’s This is Our Youth.

So, as it turns out, he has many more sides and he wants to show them off. I, for one, am only too excited to watch him as he blossoms into an actor that is a force to reckon with.

At first, he caught my intrigue with his amazing performances in two of my favorite movies. I flirted a little with his earlier works. And now he’s wining and dining me with his recent accomplishments and confidence as he breaks away from his comfort zone. At this point in our relationship, I’m head over heels for him.
