While doing a search for an article on haircuts, I came across this post by Honey & Fitzabout bobby pins and could not believe what I was reading! I use bobby pins to pull my bangs back while exercising or to keep the hair out of my face on a windy day. I use them for braids, to create some volume, or to hold a messy bun in place. The list of uses for bobby pins really is endless. But… have I been using bobby pins the wrong way all this time? How hard can it be? There are only two choices!
Well, the answer is a big fat, yes! I have been using bobby pins for the right purposes, but the wrong way all this time. If you still use the good ol’ fashioned bobby pins (they have evolved in colors and shapes) with the grooves on one side, you will want to know the grooved side should never be facing out for the world to see! They are to be put in face down! The purpose of the grooves is to grip your hair and the flat side is meant to press the hair down into those groves.
Who knew? Not me, but I am pretty sure I am not the only one who has been using them the wrong way after reading the Honey & Fitzpost. It’s good to know I was not alone, but even better to know the right way to use these handy hair tools. I have already tried the proper way of using the pins to pull my bangs back and can report that if you follow suit, you will not have to fix them or any other style you try for the rest of the day! What a life changer, in my case about 18 years late, but better late than never! You are welcome bobby pin fanatics!

When you hear the term BB cream, I think the two most common responses are, “Can’t live without it!” or “Never heard of it!” Now that I’ve discovered it, my response is most definitely “can’t live without it”! If your response is never heard of it, you’re missing out! I’m sure that when you hear about what it does, your response will quickly cycle from “I need to have that” to “I can’t live without it” too!
I first came upon this wonderful quick and easy 5 in 1 formula when perusing Smashbox cosmetics (I am a huge fan of the brand, especially their Halo Hydrating Perfecting Powder, a 2010 Beauty Award Winner! I’ll save that awesomeness for another time though.) on Sephora’s website. Once I find a product I like, I tend to sit for hours and look at all the products the brand sells and their reviews. Since my skin is so sensitive, as in I am even sensitive to the products that claim to be for “sensitive skin,” it is very hard for me to just try any product and not breakout or get a rash.
I happened to click on Smashbox Camera Ready BB Cream without knowing exactly what a BB Cream is supposed to do for you. At a quick glance, I saw about 3 eye-catching pros that made me want to read more about it:
SPF 35 (ladies, you must wear it everyday no matter if you live in Seattle, Washington or Laguna Beach, California).
Reduces fine line and wrinkles after only four weeks ( I am not getting any younger, so why not start early)!
The next five words sealed the deal for me: Moisturizes, Primes, Perfects, Controls Oil, and Protects! A product that can do all of that combined, to me, equals about 20 more minutes of sleep in the morning and less clog filling products.
Smashbox first heard about BB creams when makeup artists in the photo studios on location in Asia found out it was the best tool to perfect the skin. It uses “progressive” coverage, meaning you can achieve different levels of coverage depending on on how you wear it. All I use is a little concealer under my eyes, then a few dabs of the BB cream, rub it in and I am set for the day. When I say set for the day, I mean it literally lasts me all day. On days where I need more coverage, I top it off with the Smashbox Powder, mentioned above.
There are plenty of Beauty Balm Creams out there ranging from about $9 – $126 USD. Smashbox’s BB is $39 USD and worth every penny. Unlike some other BB Creams, Smashbox’s version is appropriate for all skin types, free of fragrance (I dislike the smell of flowers on my face all day), dermatologist tested and non-acnegenic ( meaning not likely to cause or promote acne). I have been using it for a month, with no breakouts and my skin appears more radiant. BB creams that are sold at your local drugstore such as Loreal, Garnier, Aveeno, just to name a few may work just as good as the higher price ones, but read the fine print, some claim to be BB Cream’s but don’t have all the same benefits with others simply say they are “like” BB creams without actually being one. I would look for the main five words I mentioned about one label before making a decision and of course, purchase according to your budget or brand preference.
I am not sure about everyone else, but when I have my eyebrows newly plucked and/or waxed, I feel like a completely different person. The shape of your eyebrows can change the look of your entire face. I used to get my eyebrows waxed every month. In the past year, I decided to grow my eyebrows in a bit (that thin straight line that was the “look” in high school, thankfully is not in anymore). Pimples, we all get them. No matter how old I get, it seems I always get those one or two annoying red dots on my face at the worst possible time. My first instinct is to pick and squeeze the nefarious zit until it’s gone (even though it is the worst thing to do!) and it’s obvious when I’m guilty of giving into the urge because the pimple always looks worse than it did when I started! Picking and popping is definitely the wrong way to deal with a pimple, so what’s the right way? Continue reading “Do you know how to hide a pimple?”→
Since I am a sucker for getting magazines in the mail, Rachey Ray, is one of the few I get. Even if I do not ever make a recipe, it gives me hope that one day I can, if I wish. While flipping through and telling myself I will make that Broccoli Frittata or the Artichoke Carpaccio, I found the “Fast Idea” section. What caught my eye was chocolate; I guess this is why I choose to bake rather than cook. Chocolate-Banana Melts, also known as two slices of bread, with nutella spread on each slice topped with bananas. You butter the bread and sprinkle on sugar and cook as you would grilled cheese. Two minutes on each side. There you have yourself a super quick and yummy recipe. I will purchase my Nutella ( or chocolate-hazelnut spread you want) and try this out. I am the type of person that likes to change my hair for each new season. I hate to get the same haircut as last time and spend a lot of time scooping out not only what is fashionable, but also what is low maintenance enough for me to pull off. I usually hop on the internet and search for recent pictures of my go to celebrities, Jessica Biel and Jessica Alba, and see what their hair is up to. Between the two of them, I can usually find either a hair color, cut, or style that I think I would like. Continue reading “Low Maintenance Hair Cuts and Styles”→
I must say I love living somewhere where you get the full effects of the seasons changing. I don’t think I could live somewhere where it was 50-60 degrees out while shopping for a Christmas tree (just my preference) I do get jealous of the California and Florida girls when I am get the ice pick out for my car at 6am! When there is about one month left of the season, I go in to the whole ” I can’t wait for winter to be over or I can’t wait to go swimming, etc.” So, with summer in New Jersey being more humid than usual. I can’t wait for the seasons to change… What’s next? Fall! Let me count the ways why I can’t wait to ditch my flip flops and tank tops. Continue reading “5 Reasons… I am Excited for Fall!”→
Dessert is my favorite food to eat, especially cookies and cake. It is just about the only thing that gets me in the kitchen using the stove (I love making cakes because you get to use icing and sprinkles and decorate it however you like)! Walking through a department store one day, my sister came across a nifty looking box… Babycakes Cake Pop Maker. The name alone made me want to buy one, but I didn’t have to! My sister scooped it right up. She decided to use this awesome gadget to make her own cake pop favors for my niece’s first birthday party. With Philosophy’s Purity Made Simple, you can say goodbye to makeup remover at night. If you are anything like me, there are days when you are too lazy to remove your makeup before bed and regret it in the morning when you have a nice new blemish on the chin or forehead. Purity solves all those problems. Goodbye to cotton balls and the extra step of rubbing yet another product all over your face (all that rubbing bothers my skin) in an attempt to get clean. Purity is a one step facial skin cleanser, which also tones and melts away all face and eye makeup, while lightly hydrating skin. I have very sensitive skin, so it can be difficult to find products that keep my face clear and clean without causing the additional problem of irritation. Purity is extremely gentle and fragrance free which is a must for me. It leaves my face looking great and the natural oils in the cleanser keep my skin from drying out.
