For anyone who hasn’t yet discovered the amazingly hilarious and ultra-relatable comedy that is Broad City, you are seriously missing out. Created by Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer, the show is a portrayal of the lives of two twenty-somethings living in New York City. They’re pretty much broke, they hate their jobs, and their love lives aren’t exactly fairytales. Sound familiar? If the answer is ‘yes’ (which I’m betting it probably is), you’re sure to love Broad City as much as I do. Continue reading

#ThatAwkwardMoment is no longer just a popular phrase on Twitter; it’s now jumped off the computer screen and onto the movie screen. That Awkward Moment is set to release this January. The movie is somewhat of a comedic romance, centering on a three-way bromance, chronicling the trio during their pact to remain loyal to each other- although their relationships with women some times get in the way. If this doesn’t sound interesting yet, there are five major reasons why you should go check out the movie.

Alpha House is Amazon’s first original series and comes from creator Garry Trudeau, the cartoonist behind the long running political comic-strip Doonesbury. Alpha House, which was originally inspired by a true story, is about four United States Senators who share a small house. The show humorously follows the four Republicans through various political situations. There’s a reelection coming up, a potential grand jury indictment, and of course Democrats that need ignoring.  So far, the first three episodes are available on Amazon for free. If you’re still trying to decide if this is the show for you, check out these reasons you should watch: Continue reading

An Open Letter to Kristen Wiig

Dear Kristen Wiig,

First of all, thanks for setting the bar for facial expressions. No matter how many episodes of Saturday Night Live I’ve seen, no comedian has mastered the art of facial transformation as well as you have. I cannot even begin to explain how many replays I’ve watched on Youtube just to mimic your ability to steal a scene with your expressions and been very surprised to learn how difficult it is. Nevertheless, your standard for facial expressions has improved the quality of my Snapchats, and I am eternally grateful for that.

Also, your BFF relationship with Maya Rudolph has made for some amazing entertainment. From Bridesmaids to Friends with Kids to occasional SNL reunions, this is one chickmance the world could not do without. A screen shared by Kraya is guaranteed to provide raunchy humor, physical comedy, and downright ruthlessness. I could honestly watch a movie composed entirely of you two talking for two hours, you’re that entertaining together. Keep up the good work, ladies.

And speaking of movies, you have a real knack of picking out some complex and admirable roles. Although you only came onto the movie scene in the early 2000’s, you’ve really managed to set the standard for playing relatable women. As a role model in Whip It you proved that a badass roller derby player could also be flawed. In Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story you took on a very different role than usual as the wife of a Johnny Cash/Buddy Holly/Jerry Lee Lewis character and mother of about a dozen kids, and managed to really make the role you own. Not to mention my personal favorite role of yours as the young Lucille Bluth in the recent season of Arrested Development on Netflix. You were absolutely born for that role, Ms. Wiig.

Oh and by the way, your style is flawless. Of course you always look great in a hoodie, but whenever you’re on a red carpet you always stand out as a trendsetter. I’m pretty sure I hated the ombre hair trend until you gave it a try. And to be honest, I’ve brought in a picture of you to a hair salon for inspiration more than a handful of times. No matter what occasion you always keep it classy and stylish and let your personality shine brighter than your wardrobe.

There aren’t a lot of actresses these days with your kind of commitment to a character. Your dedication guarantees a laughfest in all of your roles. SNL won’t be the same without you, but I’m definitely looking forward to your future film roles. Overall I’d just like to thank you Ms. Wigg. Thank you for being a role model, a sister-figure, and a real gal’s gal.

Love,

Ally G

Movie Review: ‘Coffee Town’

How many times have you wished that you could watch a new movie from the comfort of your own home? No overpriced snacks or tickets, you get to set the temperature to the temp that you want, not overly cold, you don’t have to go out in public and interact with anyone, but you could text people without someone else complaining about it…I don’t really see a down side. Okay, so maybe it’s nice to go out and have everything taken care of for you sometimes, but most of the time I’m good with the slight hermit life and I’m betting that there are a fair number of other people who feel the same way. That’s why I was really excited when Coffee Town came out in limited release and was also available for rent on Amazon and iTunes the same day. Continue reading

Happy Cinco De Mayo!

Cinco de Mayo (Image Credit: Dean Wissing)

It’s Cinco de Mayo! Time to sip margaritas, down coronas, and drink tequila out of people’s belly buttons, or not… either way it’s the third biggest party day of the year after New Year’s and St. Patty’s Day, but do you know what Cinco De Mayo is really all about? If your guess is Mexican Independence day, no tacos for you. Mexican Independence was actually declared over fifty years before the events that inspired the Cinco De Mayo holiday and is celebrated on September 16th. So what does the 5th of May celebrate than? Cinco de Mayo celebrates the victory of the Mexican Army over the French at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. What’s the big deal about this battle you ask? Well, to explain that we need a quick history lesson.

Oh The True Heroines, I did not know my life was missing a Mad Men, Heroes, cabaret mash-up until your web series graced my screen. I will not lie, it took me until “Part Two” of the pilot to become truly engrossed, but considering each episode is only a few minutes long, you pretty much hooked me within what would be considered the first first half of a traditional television pilot and that’s impressive.   Continue reading

5 Reasons… Why I’m Obsessed with Reading

1. Reading makes me forgot about the real world and drags me into a fake one, that i want to live in for the next 300-600 pages. If the book is good, I know after the first chapter. I then become obsessed with finishing the book no matter where I am or what time it is. Which is why I am have been seeing a lot of 3:00 A.M. mornings lately!

I love naps, and couldn’t miss them more

The Good Ol' Days

I’ll start by saying, we are apparently one of the lucky ones. Our first born has been sleeping through the night since she was about 3 months old. She wouldn’t sleep unless she was swaddled, which we did until she wanted to bust out and not be confined any more. That night was traumatic; for me, not her. I was in a panic up all night thinking that every time she moved, her arms would flail and she’d wake in up in a state of hysteria. Nope. A few sleepy cries here and there and she moved right into sleeping without being put in her baby straight jacket. Her nap times were pretty awesome too. Two naps a day, that ranged anywhere from 1-2 hours. Those were preceded by some tears but still, there were naps. Our schedule was on point.
