#Girlpower. I was given this idea (Thanks Ading Andy) to talk about Feminism and to be honest, I didn’t know what I wanted to say exactly. But then everything came out like word vomit and I realized there’s so much to say but where do I even start? I want to applaud all the women out there being kickass in their field and fighting for what’s right. I’m sorry I had to cut this in two pieces but did you really wanna sit there watching a ten-twelve minute video? What women do you admire? Let me know!

* I apologize if I’m not accurate on some things.

Emma Watson might be one of the smartest actresses on the scene right now. She has come a long way from the rumors of her wanting to quit acting after Harry Potter. One year after Harry Potter ended — and after she famously got a major haircut — she starred in the film adaptation of The Perks of Being a Wallflower, a hit coming-of-age story. The year after that she added a Sophia Coppola film — whatever that truly means now — and a huge Seth Rogen and Co. comedy to her belt. Continue reading

Pop culture lovers know how tiresome it is to see reality stars and pop princesses rise to fame as their ridiculous antics and drama are splashed across the tabloids. The media eats it up, and who can blame them? The attention-seekers of the celebrity world certainly make for good gossip. The problem with that, though, is that truly talented, respectable stars get pushed aside in favor of talking over served clubbing night shanigans and *shudders* twerking. Continue reading

If you haven’t heard yet, the classic tale of Beauty and the Beast won’t be receiving just one but TWO drastic makeovers in the near future. With the success of films such as Alice in Wonderland and Maleficent, and television series like Once Upon a Time and Beauty & the Beast, it comes as no surprise that the demand for more beloved stories coming to life is higher than ever. Studios are eager to give the people what they want, and both Disney and Warner Bros. have announced that they will be releasing a live-action version of Beauty and the Beast. The two films appear to have a long road of competition before them, so why not start now? The battle of the B&B’s is on! Continue reading

When I say the name Samuel L. Jackson, I’m sure Pulp Fiction comes to mind. Or, when I mention Johnny Depp, I bet that most of you start picturing the rustic English pirate with dreadlocks, Captain Jack Sparrow. What about Sarah Jessica Parker or, should I just say Carrie Bradshaw?

These are just a few actors of many that have played an iconic role, one for which they will always be remembered. But, due to the success of these actors, they’ve gone on to play other roles…just, maybe, ones that aren’t quite as iconic.

I’d like to name a few actors who’ve played iconic roles but have yet to break away from them. Continue reading

The Oscar’s are coming, the Oscar’s are coming!

This Sunday is my Super Bowl. It’s the big game. The show stopper. The awards show to end all awards shows. And I couldn’t be more excited. This year in particular, I’ve watched so many of the movies that have been nominated and I’ve even watched more awards shows than I usually do just to get pumped for The Academy Awards.

A friend even texted me last Sunday saying “ONE WEEK TIL THE OSCARS!”. So yeah, it’s a big deal.

And as excited as I am for the movies, the show and the celeb sightings, I’m just as excited to see what everyone will be wearing. This awards season has been full of so many hits and several misses, but The Oscars is where people bring their A-game. And I, personally, cannot wait to see it.

With that, my five picks for stars destined to make the Best Dressed list come Monday morning are: Continue reading

Earlier this month, the internet was abuzz with news that J.K. Rowling wishes she hadn’t had Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger end up together in the conclusion of the Harry Potter series. In an interview with Emma Watson for Wonderland Magazine, Rowling admitted that she thinks Hermione may have been better off ending up with Harry rather than his goofy, red-headed best friend. An Open Letter to Hermione Granger

Dear Hermione,

First of all, I just want to say that I’m sorry for thinking your name was Herman for the first few years of our acquaintance. I was 6-years-old and couldn’t understand the beautiful complexity that is your name. But I really am sorry, because I know how obnoxious it is to have people say or spell your name wrong (people are always spelling mine with a “y” instead of an “ie”).

Secondly, I want to say thank you. You’ve taught me so many great lessons that I know I’ll keep with me always. You showed me that it’s possible to be smart and witty and a good friend and a good person all at once. It can be hard for me to remember that I can succeed in all the areas of my life. Sometimes I think we all feel like we have to give things up to excel in one particular thing. You taught me that I can do well at lots of things at the same time. I don’t have to give up social skills to be good at school. I don’t have to give up on studying so I can help others. I can be a good person and a successful person at the same time.

You also showed me that doing well in school doesn’t make you a nerd or a know-it-all. It just means you’re good at some things, and that’s awesome. I feel like young kids today repeatedly see the message that it isn’t cool to know the answers to the questions teachers ask. They’re taught by the media and their peers that it is better to be quiet in class or to tease the kids who speak up than it is to apply themselves. You taught me to be proud of my knowledge and that it’s okay that I enjoy school.

You were one of my biggest role models growing up, and I still look up to you to this day. You taught me the importance of being a good friend and being there for the people I love. You never left Harry or Ron’s side, even when things got tough or even when you weren’t getting along with them. You were always there for them, even when they may not have noticed or appreciated it, and I think that’s something that deserves a huge amount of respect.

I always thought you kicked ass (even before you slapped Malfoy), and you’re someone I aspire to be like. You are so clever and so full of love and kindness. You showed me that it is important to stand up for what I believe in and not to settle for less than I deserve. In fact, the many lessons you taught me shaped my adolescence, and I will never be able to repay you for that.

I’m really glad you and Ron ended up together (he was always my favorite of the boys you knew). I think his goofiness balances your tendency to be a bit serious perfectly. I could not imagine a cute or more well-suited pair, and I wish you both and all of your genius red-headed children all the best in life.

Thank you for helping me become the person I am today.

Sincerely,

Abbie Reetz

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

The Poll is now closed. Thank you for voting!

After meeting Christian Grey, Anastasia Steele slowly transforms from an innocent and somewhat naive English Literature Major to an adventurous (albeit still wide-eyed) woman with an even more adventurous “inner goddess.” Lots of women want to be Anastasia Steele and seemingly just as many would like to play her in the upcoming movie version of Fifty Shades of Grey! We want to know, who do you think would be the best actress to bring this character to life on the silver screen?

Please note, this poll is for entertainment purposes only and is in no way associated with E.L. James, Vintage Books, Universal Pictures or Focus Features. One vote per individual. Comments are closed. Poll ends  12/31/12.

Why ‘The Perks of Being a Wallflower’ is my fall movie choice!

Image Credit: © 2011 Summit Entertainment, LLC.

For years, my friends had been telling me that I needed to read Stephen Chbosky’s The Perks of Being a Wallflower.

I kept putting it off, buying newer books that I thought I would find more interesting or exciting, constantly moving Chbosky’s work farther and farther back on my bookshelf. I figured that I would get around to reading it eventually.

But then it was announced that a movie was being created with a cast filled with some of my favorite actors and actresses (Logan Lerman, Emma Watson and Paul Rudd to, literally, just name a few) and I knew that I couldn’t leave the book any longer. So I hunkered down and spent two days with Charlie.

Now I’m more excited for this movie than I have been for a film in quite some time. And sure, the cast plays a part in my excitement, but it’s so much more than just knowing that the actors and actresses can deliver the lines they are given. It’s seeing these words come to life.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower (in theaters Sept. 21) follows Charlie (Lerman), an introverted freshman who is befriended by seniors Sam (Watson) and Patrick (Ezra Miller), and his experiences with love, fear, loss and hope as he and his friends travel the terrifying inevitability that is growing up.

One of the reasons I’m excited for this movie is because I hope to understand Charlie a little more. I had trouble seeing his character for what he was as I flipped through the pages of Chbosky’s novel. I knew as I was reading that there was a great character hidden somewhere within the words of his letters, a life-changing character, and I hope that Lerman’s performance can bring me closer to that level of understanding.

Another flare of excitement on my part comes from Watson herself. As a huge fan of the Harry Potter franchise, I’m excited to see what the young actress can bring to the table in The Perks of Being a Wallflower, her first major role since she retired her wand. I think she has just the right amount of depth, attitude and grace that’s needed to pull of Sam.

Lastly, there is one moment that I am waiting for with bated breath to be immortalized on screen. One moment, one small phrase, that is capable of sending chills up my spine and making my heart ache a little at the feeling of completion I get every time I read those words. And to hear them actually come from Charlie will be amazing.

“And in that moment, I swear we were infinite.”

So sure, there are about a hundred things that I won’t be able to relate to when this movie comes out (none of which I’ll name for spoiler purposes, just in case you haven’t read the book). But there are certain things that anyone can relate to, like growing up, making mistakes and falling in love. And that’s what I think will make this movie great. I hope some of you will agree with me.
