Grilled Pizza (Image Credit: Meghan Hawes)
Who doesn’t love pizza? So, why not make a pizza on the grill? It’s fun and it does not heat up your kitchen in the middle of the Summer! Let me show you how I created a yummy grilled pizza on one hot Summer night.
It all starts with the dough. I bought the dough at my nearest grocery store. You can also purchase pizza dough at your local pizzeria. I have done this before and it is actually much cheaper because if you think about it, how much does it really take to make dough? A little flour, yeast and water? I opted for convenience however.
I took the dough out of the fridge about an hour before I was going to start working with it. If the dough is not room temperature already, you need to let the dough get to this point so that it will be easier to manage while you’re attempting to shape it into the perfect round pizza on the grill.
After your dough is room temperature, you will want to start your grill. You need it to be piping hot so that the pizza will cook well. 550 degree’s is a good start. You do not want to end up with a too doughy bite of pizza – that’s for sure. Then I took the sweet sausage that I bought and browned it on the stove. It’s better to cook your toppings before hand so that you’re ready to go when it comes time to make the pizza on the grill. It actually takes very little time to make these pizza’s so, being prepared is a must.
After I strained the browned sweet sausage out of the pan, I then proceeded to use the same pan I was browning the sausage with to lightly cook the red peppers. It’s good to cook the peppers a little so that they’re not super crunchy and raw. Having them be just a little bit soft is perfect for the pizza. If you do not like large slices like these, you can also chop them up into small pieces instead of strips. It is really just your preference.
Here is the layout. First and foremost – WINE! All in good measure of course! Take a sip and get ready to grill. First, you have your PAM spray for the grill. This is needed so that the dough does not excessively stick to your grill. Then, you have your pizza dough which I divided into four so that I could make four small pizzas instead of two larger ones. Again, if you would like a larger pizza, go for it! It sometimes is harder to manage however so be careful! Next I have the pizza toppings which I chose: sweet sausage, red peppers and basil. There is also the sauce and the mozzarella. When you have all of the ingredients for the pizza ready, you’re officially set to start your grilled pizza.
I opened the grill and sprayed PAM all over to coat the grill and make it ready for the pizza’s. As you can see in the photo, I rounded out the pizza dough the best I could and set them on the grill. It does not take long for them to brown on the bottom so, check them very often so that it does not burn. When you get to the point where your bottom is how you would like it, flip the pizza’s.
Then, proceed to top them with your sauce, cheese and toppings. Do this quickly but efficiently so that the bottom’s do not burn. When you’re done with all of the toppings, shut the grill for about 3 minutes. Check the pizza to see how the cheese is melting. When the cheese is melted, you know your pizza is finished.
VOILA!!!!!! Dig in to that pizza right away while it’s still hot.
If you have fresh basil from your garden, I suggest using it. This is my mother’s basil plant. Having the fresh basil on the pizza was so delightful. There is nothing better than fresh herbs from the garden.
Remember, you can make grilled pizza with any toppings that you like. The toppings I chose are just a few of my favorites and it turned out really well so, if you cannot decide on toppings, choose the ones that I talked about because they mesh really well together. My boyfriend and I made this up when we were in Vermont and we got to choose our own toppings. These were the three that we chose and they have been my favorite ever since. If you like spicy food, try adding a few shakes of red pepper flakes. That’ll do the trick! ENJOY!!!
What toppings did you choose? Let us know!!!
