What You’ll Need:
– School Glue
– Corn Starch
– Dowel rod/pole for hanging
– Bowl for Mixing
Time to get crafty….
Step One: Blow up your balloons! If you want variety in the size of your spheres, try using different balloons of different sizes and filling them to different percentages.
Step Two: Set up you works space. Take your dowel rod or pole and secure it between two chairs (or anything else you can find to suspend it) to create a drying area you can hang your balloons from. If you’re doing this indoors you might want to put down a drop cloth or a plastic trash bag to catch any drips from your hanging balloons.
Step Three: Hang your balloons from the rod by tying one end of a length of yarn to the stem of the balloon and the other to the rod. Make sure you space your balloons far enough apart so they’re not touching.
Step Four: Coat the balloons in a light layer of Petroleum Jelly. This will prevent the yarn from sticking to the balloon when you try to pop and remove it.
Step Five: Make your glue mix by combining about half of a bottle of glue with 1/2 cup of cornstarch and 1/4 cup of water. If your mix seems too loose, add a bit more cornstarch and glue until you’re satisfied with the consistency.
Step Six: Wrap your balloons! Start by dipping your yarn into the glue mix, and squeezing off the excess mix with your fingers. Then wrap the yarn around the balloon alternating directions between wrapping vertically and horizontally. Once you think you’ve wrapped the balloon enough to have a great looking chandelier, cut the yarn and tie it to another piece of yarn somewhere near the stem of the balloon. Then do your best to wait 24hrs while your lovely creations dry.
Step Seven: Poppin’ Time! After you wait the 24hrs for your brandy new Yarn Chandeliers to dry, go ahead and pop your balloons! If there are any glue specks remaining on the yarn, carefully remove them by tapping.
When you’re all done, hang your Yarn Chandeliers from lengths of yarn to make a beautiful decorative arrangement!
