Jessie Pavelka. In the past few months it has become a well known name to many, and for those still unfamiliar, I doubt you will be able to avoid recognizing the name (and associating it with his handsome face) for much longer. When I first set out to write this article, I knew little about Pavelka beyond the fact that he has an incredible amount of fan support for the role of Christian Grey in the movie adaptation of EL James Fifty Shades of Grey. I set out to find out a little bit more about the man behind the hype and quickly discovered Pavelka is a lot more than just a pretty face. Not only is he a professional fitness and wellness expert, he has worked on multiple television shows, written for several publications, and most recently starred in the independent film The Charon Incident.
The Daily Quirk thought readers might like to know a little bit more about the man behind the striking blue eyes, and lucky for us Jessie Pavelka agreed to tell us a bit about his life, his work, and the role every one cannot stop talking about. Read on for the interview…
The Daily Quirk: Mr. Pavelka, could you please tell the readers a little about yourself?
Jessie Pavelka: Well, lets see. I’m “that trainer guy” on Sky1 AYTSML (A Year to Save My Life). I’m a father, a husband, a son, a brother,. I travel like a mad man, somewhat of a new age gypsy. I love music, I love people (even though they drive me crazy at times) and I love the process of life, even when it hits you upside the head and says wake the f$%# up.
TDQ: What is a normal day in the life of Jessie Pavelka like?
JP: HA! Wake-up. Work. WAIT! Rowan needs me. Back to work, Oh sh$%, I have to drop Rowan off at pre-school. Work-out, damn I need to return about 15 emails. How much of it gets done? I try not to think about it. If a therapist came in and analyzed my life he/she would probably be a bit overwhelmed. Yet I’m the guy who is suppose to be helping people. Somehow my wife and I hold it all together and stay sane. We create a beautiful picture out of some pretty challenging options/interesting color options. I’m lucky to have her and Rowan by my side.
TDQ: How do you like to spend your time when you’re not training and acting?
JP: I love spending time with my family. Like I said before it’s crazy, but exciting. I enjoy playing guitar and writing music (not great at it, but getting better) Watch out Hendricks! Notice how I threaten the guy who’s not alive.
TDQ: When did you first decide fitness was going to be an important part of your life?
JP: Life kind of decided for me. I used it as an outlet at a very young age (10!). I think some of the most talented people used their trade i.e. music, acting, writing, etc during some challenging/dark times to help them cope. For me it was exercise. It helps me get back in balance. Little did I know that it was going to save me from complete destruction later in life. I am lucky to have found it/exercise.
TDQ: The work you’ve done on “Diet Tribe” and “Obese: A Year to Save My Life” is truly amazing. What do you think is the most important piece of advice you could give someone looking to get in shape?
JP: Fall in love with the feeling it gives you and the freedom you get with your body. Too many people jump in and want to just lose weight, but then find that weight loss eventually stops. Fall in love with the feeling and enjoy the freedom it gives you.
TDQ: When did you realize acting was something you wanted to pursue?
JP: I was slow out of the blocks. I had always wanted to be the characters I would watch on T.V. or on the big screen, but never really knew what it took or how to get there. My first intro into it all was when I went on the show “Friday Night Lights” as a stunt football player and was given a few lines by Peter Berg himself. I was 23 at the time and he said to me, “do you have any kids?” I said, “no way!” “Well, when you do, use this money towards their college fund.” After that my day rate went up significantly. I’m sorry son, but that money was spent a long time ago, but more has been made.
TDQ: What has been your favorite role to date?
JP: My role as a father.
TDQ: Has there been anyone you’ve been excited to work with?
JP: My wife.
TDQ: You play Clay Davidson, a “fixer,” about to complete his final assignment in the upcoming file “The Charon Incident.” What attracted you to the role?
JP: It was a just something my friend Allan Wylie and I wanted to try and put together. He had a few scripts at his disposal and I thought this one was the best fit. So, after a few pints and long walks through London, the gorilla shooting began. It’s hard to accomplish success with this kind of scripts when your doing a gorilla shoot, but I think we did pretty damn good. It opens a lot of doors for an extended story line, which is exciting. Not bad for no budget and just having fun.
TDQ: Speaking of films, your fans would love to see you play the enigmatic Christian Grey in the film adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey. Is it a role you would consider taking on?
JP: I am. It’s reminded to me everyday ;).
TDQ: The character of Christian Grey is described as being the perfect man as far are looks are concerned. How does it feel knowing you have an extremely large fanbase that thinks you fit the bill?
JP: I think it’s great and I’m extremely flattered. It’s amazing how social media has changed the game in T.V. and Film. If this would have happened a few years back, I don’t think that my name would be in the mix at all. I am lucky to be involved in the beginning stages of it all.
TDQ: Is there a dream role you would love to play? If so, what would it be?
JP: Christian Grey of course! Jk, I can’t say that because I haven’t seen the script. The artist in me wants a role that will challenge me (not that CG wouldn’t). I like a character that goes on a journey. A character that has had it all, lost it all and is trying to get back to just being ok. I love the agony of defeat just as much as I love the thrill of victory.
TDQ: Do you have any other upcoming projects you would like to share with our readers?
JP: I have a few things in the pipeline, but nothing that is ready to be talked about. Stay tuned………
I am sure Pavelka’s many fans will have no problem “staying tuned” until his next project is announced. Undoubtedly, the news most of his fans would love to hear is that he is being cast as Christian Grey. Although it is way to soon to tell which actor will snag the most talked about role in hollywood, fans have no shortage of reasons the think Jessie Pavelka is they right man for the role:
Aside from being a very handsome guy…. he can relate to Christian’s sense of hard work, drive and ambition. He has the ability to get women to work their ass off to achieve what they really want – Shelly Diprose Wareing
He is the right age, stature, description and has a perfect match to the looks as described… He also has the same health and fitness lifestyle of CG… to START! He IS an actor and is very comfortable in front of the camera. His intensity and softness can be seen in his images – he matches BOTH sides of CG’s personality. Finally, and the most important reason in my view, is that he is relatively UNKNOWN…. that seals it for me… – Renata Templeton-Caughlin
The key as to why Jessie is perfect for the role is that he has all the physical attributes of the character in the book. A physically gorgeous looking man who would make any women go not only wow but WOW when she sees him … Many actors are attractive but none so far have posessed the extra WOW factor that is needed except Jessie. -Lynda Gordon
Ever since I read the fifty shades series I said I think they need an unknown actor to play Christian. Someone who wouldn’t be known for any other part! I think Jessie for sure can play that part! He is gorgeous & exactly how I picture Christian Grey! – Evelyn Hood
Pavelka’s fans staunchly support all of his endeavors and it is easy to see why when you take into account how much appreciation he shows them and the time he takes time to correspond with them. Pavelka both tweets and leaves facebook messages directly to fans leaving well wishes and answering their many questions. Pavelka even surprised fans by ordering a shirt created by Kim Mitchell and Kellie Montgomery of Christian Grey Fans for Jessie Pavelka, and went as far as to post a video of himself with the shirt at the premiere of The Charon Incident to show his appreciation for all their support!
Personally, I was very impressed by Pavelka after having interviewed him. I must admit, I am a sucker for a set of blue eyes and some sharp cheekbones, but what truly impressed me about Jessie Pavelka was neither his his incredibly sculpted physique, nor his substantial list of personal accomplishments. I was honestly impressed by how humble and polite he was in all of our correspondence and his down to earth candor in our interview. It seems pretty clear that Pavelka is an extremely sincere and likable guy both in front of the cameras and behind the scenes.
