What Every ‘Supernatural’ Fan Needs for the Season 8 Premiere

What Every Supernatural Fan Needs for the Season 8 PremiereIt’s that time again, kids. Our favorite demon-hunting duo is back for another season of hellishly good fun on Supernatural. For those of you who have remained spoiler-free, this is what we know so far. Dean (Jensen Ackles) is in Purgatory, Sam (Jared Padalecki) is all on his own, Crowley (Mark Sheppard) is up to no good, and who knows what happened to poor Kevin Tran (Osric Chau), Advanced Placement. And for those who have been devouring every piece of information on the new season available (like me), you know that fans should be in for a seriously good time.

But while we wait out these final agonizing days, I’m here to offer a few suggestions of what you’re going to need for the big night. (That night is Oct. 3 at 9 p.m. on The CW, in case you didn’t already know.)

A box of tissues

That’s right. I’m starting this list off in exactly this way, because we all know that when the inevitable brother-hug happens, tears of happiness will be shed. But we all know that Supernatural doesn’t let its fandom stay happy long. So when the angst starts arriving, like it always does, and our emotions get the better of us, we’re going to want that box of tissues right beside us on the couch.

An air guitar

As a show known for showcasing a soundtrack with bands like AC/DC, Metallica and Kansas, Supernatural is sure to deliver an awesome song when the flashbacks to last season start playing. And you, as fans, are going to need to be ready to rock out with the best of them. Thus, an air guitar is required. So make sure those invisible strings won’t snap and that you’re perfectly in tune. Personally, I’m hoping for a little bit of Guns N’ Roses, “Welcome to the Jungle.” I mean, come on. Could you get a song any more perfect for Purgatory?

A plaid shirt (preferably red)

You may not be aware, but Dean has a “Red Plaid Shirt of Angst.” (I found that name courtesy of Supernatural-Wiki. Kudos to them.) Anyway, Winchester tears are almost guaranteed to be shed if the oldest brother has this shirt on, and I find it only fitting that every Supernatural fan should have one of his or her own. So raid your grandfather’s closet or head to a local thrift store and pick one up for cheap. You’ll thank me later.

And even if you don’t want your plaid shirt to be angst-ridden, buy one anyway. The Winchester boys love their plaid, and so should you.

An understanding of Jeremy Carver’s Supernatural past

Even though Jeremy Carver has been hard at work as the new show runner of Supernatural for a couple of months  now, the Season 8 premiere will be the first time fans get to see his work. Well, as the head honcho anyway.

In case you weren’t aware, Carver worked as a writer and eventual co-producer of the show for Seasons 3-5, creating some fan-favorite episodes like “A Very Supernatural Christmas,” “Mystery Spot” and “Changing Channels.” It is imperative, ladies and gentlemen, that we know and understand this mans creative process and style. Without this knowledge, we might assume things about Season 8 that we maybe shouldn’t assume. See the next item for further information.

An open mind

Supernatural fans love the show. I would never dream of denying or toning down this fact, because I’m a fan myself. But we can sometimes rush into judging the post-Season 5 era as sub par. So I’m asking the fandom to go into Season 8 with an open mind. To understand that this season won’t bring us back to those earlier seasons, because Carver isn’t our beloved Eric Kripke, just as he’s not Sera Gamble. We need to look at it as a new beginning; a new storyline for our boys to traverse. And I think if we do that, the fandom will find that the Winchesters, Castiel (Misha Collins), the baddies and ultimately the show are still the same things we fell in love with in the beginning.

Sure, there are about a hundred other things you might consider bringing along: salt, holy water, a book of Latin exorcisms. But really, all you need is one thing. Yourself. So my fellow hunters-in-training, I hope these last few days don’t become too unbearable, and I look forward to sharing the Season 8 experience with you all.

Hear, hear to the open mind! I’m super excited to see what Jeremy Carver has in store for us – I loved his episodes in seasons 3-5. I hope that all the people who got disillusioned after season 5 will come back and give the show another chance… I’m sure everyone who has fallen in love with the show in the last 2 years will love what Carver brings too!

I’m looking forward to a another great season of my favorite show! Although I may not have agreed with some of the story lines, I have thoroughly the road with the boys. The road of life is bumpy so Sam and Dean’s are no exception. I’m just glad it didn’t end with ‘Swan Song’ because I would have had to go to therapy with Sam being in a cage for eternity with Lucifer and Dean with Lisa? Someone who you could hardly say he was in ‘love’ with since we never saw her except for ‘The Children are All Right’ and then a few minutes in s.5 – but yeah, he goes to HER when the most important person in his life is gone! He should have been with family – Bobby! but anyway, can’t wait for season 8!

I can’t wait for the new season. Dean’s purgatory story is sounding more and more awesome as I read about it. I can’t wait to find out about Benny and what happened to Cas. The season so far is sounding like it’s going to be one heck of a ride.

I’m also glad that Dean has, finally, his own story and I hope Carver won’t take it away. After 2 1/2 seasons of Dean having to do nothing but react to the story of others, I’m going to enjoy watching what Jensen will do with post-purgatory Dean.
