For the most part, I like my dramas dark, anxiety inducing, and with a touch of sci-fi/fantasy. It looks like Fox’s new series, The Following, is going to be plenty dark and foreboding, and to that I say two out of three ain’t bad. The show’s creator, Kevin Williamson, is the same mind behind The Vampire Diaries and the Scream franchise (both guilty pleasures of mine that mix moody and scary with a touch of humor in the best way). Kevin Bacon stars as “Ryan Hardy,” a damaged former FBI agent asked to come back and consult when an infamous serial killer he helped put away, “Joe Carroll” played by James Purefoy, escapes from death row.
Before you assume this is going to be a typical cat an mouse between a team of FBI agents and a brilliant criminal just slipping by in the nick of time each episode to keep the show going, take a minute to contemplate the title. What will hopefully help to make this show different is the concept that serial killer Joe Carroll has developed a cult like following of potential killers across the United States who will kill for him at his instruction. The show’s page asks the question “since anyone anywhere could be a follower, how do you know who to trust?” setting us up for a season full of mystery, murder, and intrigue. I for one am excited to see how it all plays out. Will you be following The Following? Let us know in the comments!
The Following premieres Monday, January 21, 2013 at 9/8c on FOX.
