It’s that horrible time of year when you can taste spring on the tip of your tongue, but it’s still too cold and miserable to really enjoy any outside activities. So what better way to spend the long nights inside than sitting down and watching some fun movies you’ve probably never come across (unless you’re a Netflix browser like me).

The Ref (1994)

Even though it’s a Christmas comedy, The Ref starring Denis Leary, Judy Davis and Kevin Spacey can be watched at any point during the year. The film follows the misfortunes of Gus (Leary), a cat burglar who is forced into drastic measures after a string of bad luck. His drastic measures arrive in the form of dysfunctional couple Lloyd and Caroline Chasseur (Spacey and Davis), who he takes hostage in their home on Christmas Eve. Dark hilarity ensues as Gus transforms from criminal to referee for the quickly deteriorating couple and their troublesome teenage son, Jesse (Robert J. Steinmiller Jr.).

Viewers will both laugh out load and sympathetically relate to the problems surrounding the Chasseur family and Gus. What on the surface appears to be nothing more than the classic holiday comedy quickly turns into a movie filled with realizations and hidden depth. It’s a piece of film that anyone can relate to.

Cutthroat Island (1995)

Geena Davis stars as Morgan Adams, a female pirate captain who is racing against her uncle Dawg Brown (Frank Langella) to acquire three pieces of a map that leads to an impressive stash of gold on the remote Cutthroat Island. In order to complete her quest, Morgan must team up with con man, and obvious love interest, William Shaw (Matthew Modine) who has the ability to read the pieces of the map.

Cutthroat Island was a complete box office bomb and holds the Guinness World Record for “Biggest Box Office Loss,” but don’t judge this movie by its reception. As long as you’re not expecting a cinematic masterpiece, Davis and Langella still manage to bring excitement to the screen with pirate battles, explosions and fun costumes. It’s cheesy, but worth it.

Her Minor Thing (2005)

Imagine being outed as a 25-year-old virgin on television. Now imagine that the one who did the outing was your news reporter boyfriend.

That’s what happens to Jeana (Estella Warren), a successful young woman whose life gets turned upside down when her boyfriend Tom (Michael Weatherly) accidentally lets it slip that his girlfriend still holds her V-card on air. Jeana, unable to escape the now city-wide male initiative to end her celibacy streak, gives up her optimistic romance ideals that have been so embarrassingly shattered. Enter Paul (Christian Kane), the cute, new photographer in town who also happens to be Tom’s cameraman.

Her Minor Thingis the perfect, silly, girl’s night in kind of chick flick. So gather up a bowl of popcorn, your best friends and swoon over the likes of Weatherly and Kane. And you can also enjoy the fact that, thank goodness, the movies aren’t real.

Mr. Fix It (2006)

In this little-known romantic comedy, Bones-star David Boreanaz plays Lance Valenteen, a man who makes his living by helping men get back together with their ex-girlfriends. Calling himself “Mr. Fix It,” Lance dates the women, becomes the worst date ever, and sends the ex-girlfriends back into the waiting arms of their former beaus. All of his hard work goes astray however when his next mark is Sophia (Alana De La Garza), a women who he can’t help but fall for himself.

In all of its typical romantic-cheesiness, Mr. Fix Italso provides a sweet story about a guy you just hate to love. There’s much more to Lance than his job criteria, and viewers will come to feel for his character as the story progresses. Mix in the wonderful side characters that dot the storyline and you have a perfect movie to begin a night of Netflix.
