Hello, Norman.  A&E quickly introduces us into the creepy world of Norman and Norma Bates by starting the show off with the suspicious death of Norman’s father.  Shortly thereafter, Norman and his Electra complex mother move to the coast of Oregon to purchase the infamous old motel and house behind it.  As they settle into their new digs Norman meets some awfully friendly local girls on the way to school. He also meets his new language arts teacher, Miss Watson (see our Keegan Connor Tracy interview for more on her), who seems genuinely concerned for Norman’s well-being.

Back at the motel, Norma and Norman have more awkward interactions until the former owner of the motel confronts them about losing the property.  The drunkard tries to intimidate them but Norma is not a softy and threatens to shoot the man if he comes back to harass them.  Later that night, Norman’s girlfriends from school come by to ask Norman if he wants to study with them.  Norma quickly shuts this idea down for her own selfish reasons but Norman does not comply, instead jumps out his bedroom window and meets the girls on the road.

Norman meets his male antagonist at the party these girls take him to, by the way, that party was not very Oregon coast.  It was more like Orange County, CA – I’m a native Northwesterner and I went to college in Orange County so I can guarantee that high schoolers on the Oregon Coast don’t party like that.  While Norman is enjoying his view, Norma is being raped by the drunkard from earlier in the day.  Luckily, Norman comes home in time to knock the rapist out before he can cause more harm.  Once the attacker regains consciousness Norma reminds him why you don’t mess with her [insert Pyscho music here].

The local brass shows up just shy of catching Norma and son transporting the body of her attacker from the house to the motel tub.  There is definitely a mild flirtation between Norma and the Deputy that I think will develop as the season progresses, judging by the previews. Sheriff Romero takes a leak next to the body and they still get away with it Scott free.  Not the brightest police force, I’d say.  Norman and Norma take the body out to the bay the next night and dump it overboard.  The show ends on a poignant note as the formerly Seafairer Motel changes into the Bates Motel by the changing of signs.  I wrote too soon…we truly end on a disturbing image of a faceless woman chained to the ground in a basement being drugged by anonymous person.
