It’s official! After weeks of rumors and speculation, actress Shailene Woodley has been offered the part of Hazel Grace Lancaster in the movie adaptation of John Green’s The Fault In Our Stars.

Many people will recognize Woodley from her role as Amy Juergens in the ABC Family hit The Secret Life of the American Teenager. In 2011, Woodley’s portrayal of Alexandra King in the movie The Descendants earned her Golden Globe nomination for best supporting actress. She has also recently been cast as Tris in the Divergent film adaptation and as Mary Jane in The Amazing Spider Man 2.

In The Fault In Our Stars, Hazel is an incredibly smart and witty 16-year-old girl who has been living with thyroid cancer since she was diagnosed at age 13. She meets Augustus Waters at a support group her parents make her attend for kids with cancer, and as their relationship grows, have to learn how to cope with love, terminal illness, and all of the drama that being a teenager inherently brings.

Hazel’s physical appearance isn’t described in great detail in the book, so readers will have to decide for themselves how Woodley measures up to their imagined versions of the character. The brief description we get of Hazel at the beginning of the book depicts her as having a short, pageboy style haircut and pudgy cheeks (a side effect of her cancer treatments). One of Hazel’s main physical attributes isn’t even a part of her body: she has to use an oxygen tank and a cannula (those thin plastic tubes that loop around the head and under the nose) to help her breathe.

If the movie’s directors stick with that description of Hazel, it will be interesting to see Woodley without the long locks we’re used to. Whether or not she physically fits the image in readers’ minds, Woodley’s impressive resume of film and television hits proves that she should have no problem portraying Hazel’s unique blend of humor, cynicism, and drama. It will definitely be interesting to see how Hazel transfers from the pages of the book to the big screen.

We would love to hear what you think of Shailene Woodley as the choice for Hazel in the film adaptation of The Fault In Our Stars. Share your thoughts in the comments!
