Justice League Movie Rumors Circulate Faster than The Flash!

Ever since Marvel announced its intentions to create an Avengers film, superhero lovers and comic book fans immediately began to wonder about a movie for DC Comics’ parallel super-team The Justice League.  Actually, tongues have been wagging about a Justice League movie since 2007-08 when whispers of the first attempt at a live-action Justice League film were floating through the media; however this attempt was eventually stalled and we’ve been waiting ever since.  Several years later, the wait may soon be over. Although concrete news and information regarding the (hopefully) upcoming Justice League movie has proven to be more elusive than a superhero’s true identity, rumors have been plaguing the internet and are culminating to an all-time high now that a release date, albeit an unofficial one, has been placed at June 2015. This release date has not been confirmed by DC Entertainment nor Warner Bros. Studio, however other hints and yet more rumors have been popping up that allow us just a grain of hope for a Justice League movie to be in theatres the same year as Marvel’s The Avengers 2. Perhaps one of the latest and most promising of these rumors that may foreshadow an actual film is Warner Bros. Consumer Products and DC Entertainment’s partnership with Target, which released a line of Justice League merchandise with products centered on Aquaman, Batman, Cyborg, The Flash, Green Lantern, Superman and Wonder Woman. Rumor has it that this is a clever consumerist ploy to promote the currently nonexistent Justice League movie years before its rumored release in 2015. The Target-exclusive line launched on May 19, 2013; however, we do not have any real proof or verification that this is a promotional tool for a Justice League movie per se.

There’s a very good chance that this line may be in conjunction with DC’s upcoming Man of Steel, a film that showcases Superman exclusively. Furthermore, there are some rumors that the Justice League film would only feature Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, and the Green Lantern, which, if it proves to be true, leaves Target with too many action figures compared to movie characters. It could alternatively just be that Warner Bros. and DC know that even if there is not a Justice League movie, I’ll probably still buy a t-shirt regardless. Still, the product line is Justice League-themed and does provide a fair amount of credit to speculations into the movie. (Source 3 & 4)

While on the subject of Man of Steel, there is, of course, the potential of the new Superman movie as the foundation for a Justice League movie. Man of Steel hits theaters June 14, 2013 and some fans have speculated that this movie could be the launchpad for the Justice League movie just as 2008’s Iron Man film was the cinematic catalyst for a series of movies leading to 2012’s The Avengers for Marvel Comics.  Again, these are just speculations, but studio and production issues aside, it’s fairly safe to say that if a Justice League movie is indeed in our future, much may depend on the reception and success of Man of Steel(Source 5)

Other rumors revolve around the potential who’s-who in the movie including reports of actors who may don a mask, who may be reprising a role, and of course, who is going to be directing this much-awaited film. Both Christopher Nolan and Christian Bale, director and star of the recent Batman trilogy, have been rumored to be involved with the possible Justice League film; however neither has confirmed any part of such a film, behind or in front of the camera. Nolan has also made it abundantly clear that his Batman trilogy stands alone and is independent from any other films. Joseph Gordon Levitt, who played John Blake/Robin in Nolan’s Batman trilogy, was also strongly rumored to be returning to the DC cinematic universe, however Levitt claims he has no intentions as of yet to return.

Others tangled among the rumors and gossip are Will Beall as the writer as well as Ryan Reynolds, who played Hal Jordon/Green Lantern in 2011’s Green Lantern; and Henry Cavill, Superman/Clark Kent in the upcoming Man of Steel, may reprise their roles, but again, unconfirmed rumors. I suppose it is a bit difficult to have a solid cast when the movie doesn’t even officially exist yet. I’ll admit my own biases: I’m more of a Marvel lady at the end of the day. Regardless, even the staunchest of Marvel fans cannot deny the allure of DC’s superhero backlog. DC has to its name arguably the most iconic superheroes in Western culture with the super-trifecta of Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman alone acting as cultural metaphors. Although this may not be without dispute, many of us have been wondering how a Justice League film hasn’t flown onto the big screen faster than a speeding bullet. With any luck, Superman’s solo film next month will put the lasso of truth in place to squeeze some official news out of the DC and Warner Bros. regarding when, if ever, we can officially expect to see the Justice League in action on the big screen.
