The rumors of a Magic Mike sequel have been buzzing around Hollywood since the successful release of the original last summer.  Well, this blogger and The Daily Quirk readers want to know if they need to start collecting dollar bills now or if our dreams of another film of heavily endowed Richie, bootie shorts Dallas, and the magical Mike himself half (or nearly) naked is never going to happen.  I’ve done a little digging and this is what I’ve found.

Steven Soderburgh, Channing Tatum, and Joe Manganiello have spoken to the press about the development of another film although not necessarily as a sequel more likely a prequel.  Joe Manganiello told Hollywood, “We’re actually talking about the possibility of doing the prequel.  Because if you do the sequel, then you lose Mike [Channing Tatum’s character],” he said.  “Otherwise, what’s Mike going to do? He’s going to come back for one big heist…so, you would do the prequel – how they go there.”  As for the general storyline of the new script, Tatum offered this to The Hollywood Reporter, “It will be a road-trip movie, and it will essentially be the movie that everyone thought the first one was going to be: crazy and fun and less slice-of-life and less drama. The first one, we had to make not so cheesy and campy; this one we are going to swing for the fences.”  I can only imagine what the boys will be wearing and doing to amp up the camp…the possibilities are endless.

As for rumors that Tatum will take the reins as director of the much talked about prequel, since Soderburgh has announced his official retirement (again) after the release of the HBO Liberace biopic Behind the Candelabra, he balks.  In a very apropos metaphor Tatum says, “It is hard for me and Reid to direct after one of the greatest directors of our time. Steven has argued [for us to do so]. He has said he would shoot it; he would DP it,” the actor went on. “And there’s another thing: Is that good? Because he is such an opinionated and talented man, if he wants to do a five-minute tracking shot through a forest, you don’t want to doubt him. It would be like having sex with your girlfriend while her porn-star ex-boyfriend is in the room watching you.” Or watching your boyfriend strip for you to Ginuwine’s “Pony” while Magic Mike plays in the background, it’s doomed to failure.

After all my rumor mill research, it still seems as though the prequel is caught up in development hell.  Once I read that a production company has purchased the script and pre-production has begun, I’ll start gathering my ladies, collect my dollars, and let TDQ readers know that its about to start raining men again.  Until then, we can all enjoy fantasizing about other actors that may sign on for the next film including Zach Braff who tweeted a shirtless photo of himself on July 7th writing, “Dear @channingtatum when are auditions for Magic Mike 2? (sic)”  Oh that Zach Braff, so cute and funny.
