More and more people are lacing up their sneakers to participate in fluorescent fun runs- 5ks that incorporate a light show and your favorite dance music with your goal towards fitness! These 5k’s can be run or walked and are often followed by a concert where participants can celebrate the completion of the run with dancing and refreshments!

As a recent participant in the LivingSocial 5k Dance Party that took place in New York, NY, I highly recommend participation in a fluorescent fun run for the following reasons:

Reason 1: The Swag

T-shirts, glow-sticks, jewelry, binkies- the glowing gear is too good to pass up! The organizers of the LivingSocial 5k Dance Party put together a draw-string bag of night-run essentials for each participant. These bags (which came in neon green and black) included a race bib, a rubber bracelet etched with their slogan, “Ready. Set. Glow.” and 2 glow necklaces/headbands. If you still didn’t get your fill, stations were set up selling more of the light up goodies.

Reason 2: The Course

The 3.1 mile course is lined with speakers and lights to keep you energized during your run. The LivingSocial 5k Dance Party had light stations at almost every twist and turn, which included a set 20 ft tall air dancers and rainbow light tunnels.  A refreshment station was also set up towards the middle of the course, keeping participants hydrated.

Reason 3: The After Party

Finishing your 5k calls for celebration! Fluorescent fun runs, such as the LivingSocial 5k Dance Party, Electric Run and Neon Splash Dash, are followed by after-parties hosted by DJ’s and/or popular musicians. These after parties/light shows have participants dancing, socializing and refueling with food and refreshments.

Reason 4: Fun with Friends

Fluorescent fun runs are great way to spend time with friends from before the run takes place to after crossing the finish line. The 5k can serve as an opportunity for friends to bond through training, putting together luminescent running outfits and encouraging each other to get through the course! A post-run reward should also come with the event- whether it be an organized dance party or a simple trip for a celebratory smoothie!

Reason 5: They’re For Everyone!

The announcer at the LivingSocial 5k Dance Party asked the 10,000+ eager participants who among them was running a 5k for the first time. The number of hands that shot up proved that fluorescent fun runs are for people of all shapes, sizes and athletic ability. The course design- bright, upbeat, and energizing- creates an environment that is friendly for both experienced and new runners. Participants are given the opportunity to immerse themselves in their favorite dance music while conquering their personal fitness goals.

Fluorescent fun runs are making their way across the country, giving their participants an experience they won’t forget.  Visit a fluorescent run’s website for dates and details!
