Getting over a breakup is never easy. More often than not you’ll end on bad terms with your ex. However, that won’t always be the case. During the first few days after a breakup it is completely normal to feel angry, sad, and maybe even bitter towards the person. Yet as time passes by, you may be faced with the decision of whether or not to maintain contact with your ex.
What kind of contact, you may ask? I am talking about maintaining a friendship of sorts with your ex. Perhaps you’re already shaking your head in disbelief because the first thought that typically pops into your head when you think of a breakup is moving on and not looking back. Keep reading through this and you might just change your perspective.
The initial days/weeks after breaking up with a significant other will no doubt be difficult, especially if the relationship was a long one. However, once you have given yourself enough time to gather your thoughts and focus on your own endeavors, perhaps you will develop a new perspective on things. It really depends on the reasons why the breakup occurred in the first place. For instance, if the break up was on bad terms then more than likely you won’t want to have anything to do with your ex. However, not all couples break up on bad terms. There are instances where breakups occur on a mutual consensus.
Maybe both individuals decide it would be better to remain friends. If you find yourself in a position where you are faced with the decision of whether or not to maintain a friendship with an ex, just remember to analyze your specific situation and examine the pros as well as the cons. If you find the cons outweigh the pros, then it is best to move forward with your life and not maintain a friendship with your ex. If you had a friendship before becoming an official item, perhaps you may want to consider rescuing your friendship. Good friends should not have to break contact just because they aren’t officially together anymore.
Again, there are many perspectives to take into consideration when tackling this topic, but just remember that if you feel comfortable remaining friends with an ex, it should not be a taboo!
