“Oh no,” you say, “What will I do now that one of television’s most beloved dramas, Breaking Bad, is off the air?” Better Call Saul! Saul Goodman, the character who served as Walter White’s lawyer/advisor/financial operator on AMC’s hit show, is receiving his own spinoff in the form of a prequel. The series will also be helmed by Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan. So, with this news coming from AMC and Sony Pictures Television, below is a list of things we’d like to see out of the Saul-centric series:

Saul, Saul, Saul!

Overall, the man is a sleaze ball and a fantastic one at that. Perhaps the show’s most recognizable supporting character, actor Bob Odenkirk delivers a pitch-perfect performance as Walter White’s (Bryan Cranston) attorney. He brings a much-needed comedic relief/goofy charisma to the acclaimed show, so it would only make sense that we get more of that with this character-focused spinoff. Hopefully, the show will answer some questions about Saul’s origins. (I can’t see a young Saul in law school…)

Saul’s connections

With the origin story, hopefully we will see just how Saul is able to make such strong connections with such sketchy people, as we see him throwing ideas for ways out of tight situations for a (seemingly-always) cornered Walter White. Also, it would be fun to find out more on the relationship between Saul’s receptionist Francesca and even his obnoxious bodyguard, Huel.

Crossovers into Breaking Bad

Character crossovers have to be inevitable, and with the prequel idea, the creators could go in several cool directions!

Perhaps a bit more light-hearted tone

Breaking Bad, while always excellent, was definitely an emotional tour de force. Some might even call it a “tragedy.” With Better Call Saul!, (tentatively titled) hopefully the creators put Saul’s goofy mannerisms front and center.

Other origin stories

Let’s not forget that Saul was the man who helped set Walter up with Gustavo Fring (Giancarlo Esposito) and his henchmen, most notably Mike Ehrmantraut (Jonathan Banks). Among other characters, those two definitely deserve some “origins” spotlight if the story allows for it.

I’m interested to see if the series’ creators decide to go with case-by-case stories, a la Law and Order (courtesy of Saul’s profession) or take on over-arching linear tale. So, as the show was just announced as in-development, it’s now time for the waiting game.
