Tips for Making the Most of Sweater Weather

Sweater Weather

The Leaves are changing colors, people are flocking to Starbucks to get their favorite seasonal drink (the Pumpkin Spice Latte tastes like Fall), and everybody is pulling out their favorite sweaters in preparation for cooler weather.

As summer transitions to fall, the temperatures outside fluctuate between warm and cool. Sweater weather is always my favorite, but sometimes it’s difficult to decide what to wear my sweater with if it’s on the warmer side outdoors.

On days where it is oddly toasty outside in the sun and in the shade it feels like Siberia, opt for thinner sweaters. Thinner sweaters provide a little warmth without the feeling of overheating in the sun. Although thinner sweaters are great for this type of weather, thicker sweaters can also be worn. If you are like me and only own thick sweaters, try pairing your comfiest, coziest sweater with a pair of shorts and either sandals or flats. If you are walking a distance or you are going to be in the sunshine for a long period of time, shorts and light shoes will come in handy, and when you come across those chilly, windy, shady areas, you’ll be thankful you wore a thicker sweater.

Tip: Remember that cooler colors reflect heat, so don’t overdo it and wear a heavy sweater that is a darker shade!

There are also Autumn days that are deceitful (yes, you read that right! Weather can be deceitful). You think it’s going to be warm outside, but it turns out to be hair-raising cold and vice versa! There are always those awkwardly, pesky days where it is too hot for jeans and too cool for shorts, and you just don’t have a clue what to wear. Next time you find yourself in this predicament, try a flowy, airy skirt. My friends who find the whole season chilly pair their skirts with leggings and a great pair of ankle boots or tall boots (usually riding style boots). But if you are oblivious to days like this, go for a skirt that compliments your sweater and wear flats or even boots by themselves.

Tip: Don’t belt your sweater, skirt combo. I know you’ll have the urge to, but don’t! The great thing about this season is it is all about that cute, cozy look. Don’t restrict yourself by wearing a belt if you don’t need to!

Now we all know there are Autumn days that feel like it is the middle of Winter and you just want to stay in your pajamas and drink hot chocolate, but you can’t!. On these days you can put your best sweater to use with a pair of jeans, boots and my very favorite article of clothing: fuzzy socks!

Tip: Try wearing a solid neutral colored sweater with a dark, muted colored pair of jeans-such as burgundy or forest green.

This Fall when you want to model your favorite sweaters, make sure to check your weather app before you head out. Sweater weather in the Fall is the best time to mix warm and cool seasonal clothing. Just remember to make the best use of Autumn’s sweater weather before the snow begins to fall.
