As an entertainment-focused society, we all grow to love certain things about the television shows we watch. It might be the characters, the story arcs or the actors, all of which are more than believable choices. But sometimes, what really hooks a viewer, or holds meaning to a devoted fan, is the theme song. It’s something you can sing along with, rock out to and remember for the rest of your life. Check out the five theme songs I’ve picked out as being particularly memorable below!
The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson
There’s no doubt that the many, many people who watch The Late Late Show tune in for not only the Scottish-turned-American comedian host and his quick wit, but also his robot skeleton sidekick Geoff Peterson and Secretariat, the hidden-intern horse. However, the one thing about the show that really gets viewers in the mood for a good laugh so late at night is the show’s theme song, co-written and recorded by Ferguson himself when he became the new host. It has a catchy tune, fun lyrics and encourages people to embrace the night owl life. Because as Ferguson says…you can always sleep through work tomorrow!
Game of Thrones
8 There’s something incredibly majestic about the instrumental opening to HBO’s smash hit Game of Thrones. It’s powerful, striking and totally makes you want to pick up a battle axe. Don’t even try to deny that when those first notes pound through your speakers, you’re not singing the tune and moving your arms in grand gestures right along with the music. No words are necessary to make this theme one of TV’s most memorable.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Buffy the Vampire Slayer staked the hearts of many during the seven years it ran on TV, and it’s guitar-soaked opening was one of the things that many devoted fans loved about the show. It allowed air guitar sessions, heavy drumming on all available surfaces and the occasional session of headbanging. Even those who aren’t as familiar with Buffy and her quiet home in Sunnydale can recognize the theme song (and probably rock out right alongside the best of them.)
The Big Bang Theory
It’s educational! It’s performed by the Barenaked Ladies! And it’s longer than they ever show on TV! The Big Bang Theory is arguably one of the most popular half-hour comedies on network TV today, but it’s safe to say that is has the most recognizable theme song of them all. Nerd hearts soar when the tune begins to retell the scientific understand of how humans came to inhabit the Earth, and the not-so-nerdy still love it because Barenaked Ladies! Go ahead and shout it with me – it all started with the big bang!
If you were a ’90s kid, one of the most memorable things about your childhood were the Nickelodeon cartoons. And CatDog was one of the network’s most recognized, even if it wasn’t its most popular. Whether you were a fan or not, it’s hard to deny that once you heard the theme song, the ridiculous lyrics and country-twang tune would be stuck in your head for the remainder of the day. And you have to admit, CatDog was kind of adorable. Is your favorite TV theme song not on the list? Tell me all about what I missed in the comments below!
