With the last episode of Season 7 having aired months ago and the premier of Season 8 not airing until January, Psych fans might have suffered withdrawal had it not been for the two-hour-long special episode, Psych the Musical. Like many other Psych-Os, I sat in front of my television on Sunday, December 15, anxiously awaiting the start of the musical extravaganza that I had been anticipating for months.
And I was not disappointed. The episode was filled with all the wit, action, and “psychic visions” that we all know and love – the famous pineapple even made its appearance right in at the beginning. But what made it so special were the various musical numbers sprinkled throughout. The cast sang and danced their way through the case, and yes, that means the whole cast – everyone from Shawn and Gus to Lassiter to Woody, the coroner! The songs happened all throughout the episode, always coming at just the right time and often taking me by surprise. I would have loved the episode no matter what, but the musical factor made it so much more entertaining.
The story involves the pursuit of a former playwright who has escaped the mental institution where he has been held for years. He appears to be on a killing spree, and it is up to Shawn, Gus and the rest of the Santa Barbra Police Department to catch him and prove him either guilty or innocent. And one of my favorite things about this episode is that they get help from none other than the infamous Yang! Any episode with Yang is an exciting one, and this episode is no exception.
I won’t say how the case is solved, because I don’t want to ruin the surprise (and I was definitely surprised), but for anyone who hasn’t seen the cast of Psych in their musical debut, I would highly recommend watching it. It really lived up to the hype. I laughed, I cried, I had the music stuck in my head for a very long time.
So be sure to check out Psych the Musical, or watch it again if you’re like me and already saw it. And get ready for the next season which premiers January 8!
