Some celebrity friendships are blatantly obvious. It’s doubtful you’d hear anyone with even the slightest bit of celebrity knowledge say, “You know, I really don’t think Tim Burton likes that Johnny Depp guy” or “I wonder if Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio are friends in real life?” Yet there are some celebrity friendships that are either so low key or so seemingly mismatched that they surprise even the most avid celebrity gossipers.

Lorde and Taylor Swift

This was the most recent celebrity friendship to make the world of celebrity news utter a collective “huh?” Their friendship became apparent after Taylor’s Instagram birthday party pictures showed Lorde by her side, and it wasn’t just surprising, it was…well, confusing. A love song crooning pop star hanging out with a dark, artsy musician with a penchant for jerky dance moves straight out of a Japanese horror flick? It’s a bit strange to think about, but Lorde and Taylor (ha!) just go to show that opposites do indeed attract.

Angelina Jolie and Gwen Stefani

If this is a celebrity friendship that you’re having difficulty computing, don’t worry – you’re not alone. Apparently, these two have been getting their children together for play dates for years, but have managed to keep their friendship mostly under the radar. A pop-punk rocker and a reserved Oscar winner – who would have thunk it?

Maybe this friendship shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise, seeing as they’re both former child stars who have shared the screen a time or two. Still, the idea of bright and bubbly Dakota Fanning being friends with notoriously private and broody Kristen Stewart is surprising. Based on their public personas, you have to admit that imagining a girls’ night with these two is rather amusing.

Kate Hudson and Lea Michele

The former Glee co-stars proved to be more than just co-workers when it was revealed that Kate Hudson helped Lea Michele get away from prying eyes following the death of boyfriend Cory Monteith by taking her into her home. This is the kind of surprising celebrity friendship we’re more than happy to support.

It’s well known that Courteney Cox is besties with Jennifer Aniston and Ed Sheeran is besties with Taylor Swift. Which makes sense. Two are actresses who starred on Friends together; the other two are singer-songwriters who tour together. Even though their friendship has been known for a while (he spent Thanksgiving with her!), Courteney Cox and Ed Sheeran being buddy-buddy sounds like a peculiar piece of crossover fan fiction.

The most surprising celebrity friendships can remind us that though as fans we may make assumptions about the lives of the rich and famous, they are in fact human. Just like the rest of us, they too have friendships that look a bit quirky to the outside world.
