There’s only one thing I love more than an awards show, and that’s when it surprises me. Often times, we can all simply guess who is going to win a category by simply looking at the nominees. For example, when Taylor Swift won Favorite Country Artist, you know everyone in the world said “called it!” However, at the 2014 People’s Choice Awards, I was pleasantly surprised by who took home the trophy, who didn’t and the fashion in which the stars accepted their awards.

Sandra Bullock Comes Out On Top

Don’t get me wrong; I love Sandra Bullock in all her forms, whether it is as a dramatic or comedic actress. However, her victories at the People’s Choice Awards came as a surprise to me. She won in four categories: Favorite Movie Comedic Actress, Favorite Dramatic Movie (Gravity), Favorite Movie Duo (with George Clooney in Gravity) and Favorite Movie Actress. The nation fell in love with her dynamic duo with Melissa McCarthy in The Heat, which landed her the award for Favorite Movie Comedic Actress. This came as the biggest surprise to me, as she beat out her co-star, the overly aggressive and comedic genius character Mullins that McCarthy portrays. Gravity beat not only a favorite, but also a classic for Favorite Dramatic Movie, trumping Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation of The Great Gatsby. Given the response to Leonardo DiCaprio’s performance and the enthralling cinematography of the film, this also came as a big shock to me. More power to Sandra Bullock for proving her versatility as an actress, dominating all genres of the PCAs this year!

Finally, Recognition For Sarah Michelle Gellar

How many Buffy the Vampire Slayer fans are there out there? For seven years, this show had a massive following, making Sarah Michelle Gellar the powerhouse woman we all wanted to be. Yet, she was never recognized for that coveted role at the People’s Choice Awards. What was even more surprising was that Gellar finally took home an award for her role in The Crazy Ones. When she got on stage, instead of spewing excitement for her new role, she thanked her old friends and old crew on Buffy. It was strange to see her winning an award for something else, and definitely made me nostalgic for the series she recognized!

Miley… Are You There?

Many people have called 2013 the year of Miley Cyrus. Yet, where was she at the People’s Choice Awards? Not on the winners list, that’s for sure. Though the controversial star was nominated for many awards, she did not take home a win. I have yet to conclude if this is or isn’t surprising. Her change in appearance and attitude has definitely gained her a mass amount of attention, but are the lack of awards evidence that this attention isn’t because of her work as an artist? Miley definitely has the pipes and the talent to take home a PCA. However, it’s not far-fetched to believe that her behavior may hinder her in producing the right kind of recognition.

Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder’s Charm

The winners for Favorite On-Screen Chemistry don’t only have chemistry as Damon and Elena. Nina and Ian have dated in real life, and were one of Hollywood’s favorite couples until their split in 2013. However, this break up doesn’t keep them from being undeniably charming together. They accepted their award with a graceful humor, joking light-heartedly about their relationship before Ian kissed Nina on the cheek. This surprise was refreshing, and I think made everyone watching squeal just a little, with hope that their love will be rekindled in the future. Come on, you two! You won Favorite On-Screen Chemistry for a reason.

It was a night of laughs, tears, awkwardness and excitement. We can’t wait for the rest of award season, and hope to be just as surprised by the results as we were at the PCAs. Miss the show? You can head here for a full list of nominees and winners.
