Ella Yelich-O’Connor, or Lorde as most know her, is a 17-year-old New Zealand native who has quickly taken the music world by storm. Made famous by her hit single “Royals,” Lorde’s latest album Pure Heroine is currently among iTune’s Top 10 albums, “Royals” still remains in the Top 10 singles and she just made her Grammy debut Jan. 26 by performing at the Staples Center. Along with singing at the award ceremony, Lorde was nominated four times and went home with two Grammys, one for Song of the Year and one for Best Pop Solo Performance, again for “Royals.”

Well, apparently musical talent runs in the family. Lorde’s 15-year-old sister, India Yelich-O’Connor, seems to be following in her big sister’s footsteps. On Jan. 18, India released her cover of  “Say Something,” the popular song by A Great Big World and Christina Aguilera that has reached number one on iTunes. She made the track public through her blog, Genres of India, and her Twitter account. To date, the rendition has almost 350,000 plays on SoundCloud, and the count is gaining rapidly.

Make no mistake, India’s version is definitely a rough recording with some scratchy background noises and pitchy moments here and there. Her voice overlays are also not completely without flaw. Nevertheless, it’s clear that the talent is there. Her vocals are strong and passionate, not unlike her sister’s, and with some professional recording gear I’m sure she could sound just as good as half the pop stars out there. Although not all feedback on her SoundCloud account is positive, she is certainly gaining a ton of publicity from her spontaneous upload.

Is India the next Lorde? Maybe not yet, but there is undoubtedly potential. Stay tuned for more on the younger Yelich-O’Connor sister. I’m sure this isn’t the last we’ll hear from her!
