Three words. Sky. Tonia. Ferreira. Doesn’t ring a bell? Stop right there, it’s already breaking my heart you don’t know who she is.
Or maybe you think you know who I’m talking about because the name sounds familiar. That’s because she’s opening up for Miley Cyrus on her Bangerz tour that kicks off Valentine’s Day of this year.
Whether or not you’ll be seeing her opening up for Ms. Former Hannah Montana, I think it’s about time you understand why Ferreira is such a huge deal because I believe this year will be her year.
Let’s start with the absolute basics. Ferreira was born July 8, 1992 making her 21 years young and was raised in Los Angeles. Raised by her grandmother, Ferreira was able to become family friends with Michael Jackson while growing up. According to an interview with Details magazine, she says, “My grandmother worked on his hair for, like, 30 years, so I kind of grew up with him. […] I didn’t know he was, like, Michael Jackson.”
Her career kicked off with the help of MySpace (Yes, you read right. MySpace!) which lead her to be discovered just like everyone else is starting to get noticed nowadays! She was eventually noticed by producers Bloodshy & Avant and then in 2009, she was signed to Parlophone. She has also been signed to Capitol Records and Polydor Records.
However, she wasn’t just some overnight sensation, nor did she have the easiest road to success. During her teen years as a new artist, she was struggling finding a balance with her producers. She’s said to have written around 400 songs during the process with, obviously, tons of them thrown to who knows where.
After releasing several hit EPs, she finally debuted her studio album Night Time, My Time in 2013 — even though it was originally supposed to be released in 2011.
According to an article by Pitchfork, Ferreira joked that this was “five years in the making.” She explains, “I was in a different headspace when I wrote these songs” which is true since this album is basically an accumulation of her years up until she turned 21!
Her album includes her buzzworthy song “Everything is Embarrassing” that reminds me of Lorde (You know… if she did dance-like pop songs) and her other single, “You’re Not the One.” The album just enamors itself with teenage angst and romance. Reminds me of some kind of ‘90s grunge soundtrack and I’m a sucker for just about anything that has to do with the ‘90s. I think that’s why attracted me so much to Ferreira.
Besides possessing musical talent, late last year Redken announced Ferreira would be the newest face of their brand and let me just say, she’s killing it. Based on the behind-the-scene images and her day-in-the-life vlogs on YouTube, you just wish you could be as cool as Sky!
Adding onto her singing career is, of course, her acting career with appearances in Across the Universe, Putty Hill, and IRL.
If you’re into Marina and the Diamonds, Lorde or even Ellie Goulding, you’re sure to fall in love with Sky Ferreira too!
