5 Fun Retro Inspired Housewares

Retro Home

Whether you’re a first-time homeowner just starting to decorate, you’re trying to revamp your current place, or you simply enjoy browsing the web for cool housewares like me, you can find some unique pieces out there if you look in the right stores. Sure, places like Ikea are great for a good bargain, but you might want to look elsewhere if you aim for your home to stand out. What better way to do so than adding in a retro touch here and there? Check out these finds to spice up your living space!

Fainting Couch

Nothing says old-fashioned like a fainting couch. Hopefully you won’t need it because of falling over from corset-induced lack of blood flow, but it will still manage to look luxe and act as a comfy napping spot. This velvet chaise from Urban Outfitters definitely isn’t cheap but would be a stunning addition to any home. It’s available in 7 colors and definitely gives off a retro vibe, so you can pretend to be Betty Draper every day.

Colorful Mixer

Every foodie needs a good mixer as a kitchen staple. This KitchenAid Artisain 5 Qt. Stand Mixer is the perfect retro appliance. It’s offered in just about every color under the sun, including the most vintage-inspired like pistachio, watermelon and green apple. Go ahead and start cooking in style, you 1950’s housewife.

Record Player

For a retro flare, you can’t go wrong with a record player! Not only are they one of the most standard vintage home pieces, but they offer the opportunity to play all your parents’ old records that would otherwise be useless. This Needle in a Play-stack Turntable from ModCloth has built-in speakers, and if you don’t have any old records lying around, you can plug in your computer and play music from there. It’s a win-win.

Alarm Clock

Wake up feeling like you’ve stepped back into the 1930’s with this retro clock from L.L. Bean. Everyone needs an alarm clock, and this one is easy to read, battery operated and even comes in “vintage green” for an extra old-fashioned touch. Plus, this is way more stylish and reliable than depending on your phone to get you up in the morning.

Vanity Mirror

Pretend you’re some glamorous old-time movie star every time you want to catch a glimpse of yourself. This Carved Vanity Wall Mirror from Anthropologie comes in an antique white color and is covered in detailed designs. Instead of leaving a small hand-held mirror on your vanity, this can be mounted on the wall and shown off to anyone who comes in your home. You’ll feel like the next Marilyn Monroe, promise.

Retro items make any home feel more fun and original. If you don’t feel like buying any new pieces, throw some ugly, multi-colored floral wallpaper up around the house and call it a day. You’ll have people questioning what decade it is in no time.

I was born and raised in New Jersey, but after attending the University of Vermont, Burlington, VT, has become my home away from home. I’ll take Netflix and my couch over a night out every time, and I’m very happy to spend my (increasingly rarer) spare moments reading and writing.
