There’s nothing better than adding a little joy to your day. Being Joyful? Even better. Sharp and fun-loving, Joyful Drake is one of television’s favorite faces for this season. Known for the role of Tasha Woodson on BET’s top-rated original series Let’s Stay Together, Joyful has become a staple in homes across the country. Joyful sat down in an exclusive interview with The Daily Quirk to chat about life, love, and juicy details for the upcoming season of the show!
The Daily Quirk: Can you talk a little bit about how you got your start in the field?
Joyful Drake: I was always performing growing up, I was always involved in something. I was a dancer so, I loved being active. I loved to move around. I think the greatest part of having a job in my field is that I get to meet people every day. So many people, they get to the same office. They work the same job. In my field, I go from movie to movie to movie, show to show and I just meet people all over the world.
TDQ: What has been the most inspiring or life-changing moment you’ve had tied to your career?
JD: I would say a great moment of mine was when I got to work with Mo’Nique. She’s amazing. She’s just really inspirational. She loves what she does but she also loves herself and her family more which is even more awesome. It’s great to work and do what you love but it doesn’t matter if you don’t have someone to share it with.
TDQ: Let’s Stay Together has been a great success. Can you walk me through the journey you’ve had with the show?
JD: The show was the first original scripted programming show for BET. It’s been a great success for them. The cast is family, we just love to go to work and laugh and have fun. We enjoy people letting us into their living rooms every night. Working on that show has changed television. BET made Hollywood look at us and see and share that we have a voice. You know the numbers, the fans and the viewership. You can’t deny that. And because of that I feel like there’s been a huge resurgence of multi-cultural programming on every network – from cable to major broadcasting networks.
TDQ: What originally attracted you to the role of Tasha on the show?
JD: I just love Tasha Woodson. I would want to be her friend. I think we could go out for happy hour and have a cocktail or two or have a good laugh. She was just…everything. She’s a wife, she’s a mom. She’s sexy, she’s sassy she’s classy. Maybe a little bit messy. [laughs] She’s fun, so that immediately attracted me to her and I just fell in love with her. I love that she has a healthy dose of confidence too!
TDQ: I know you can’t talk much about the show’s new season – but can you give us a little hint of what we’re in store for?
JD: I would say it’s going to be a surprise for everyone. A lot of unexpected things happen. It’s still fun. Our show is a light show – it’s not a heavy show, it’s not a dramatic show. You’ll still get your laughs, you’ll still get your comedic moments. But there are going to be some changes – there might be a few fights.
TDQ: Let’s talk some more about you. If you had three words to describe your personality, what would they be – and why?
JD: Joyful because that’s ust who I am. I am my name! Ambitious because I love trying different things. I love learning different tasks. And loving. I am who I am because of the people that love me and the people that I love.
JD: I like to travel, to spend time with my family. I love to work out. I like to read a lot. And actually I’m a writer -I’m currently taking writing courses at UCLA so if I’m not working I’m probably studying or in class heading up the next phase of my life.
TDQ: What’s one think fans would be surprised to find out about you?
JD: I don’t know if they would be surprised at how much of a cheesehead football fan I am for the Green Bay Packers. I’m the biggest Cheesehead. I have a cheesehead. I used to dance for the Milwaukee Bucks and I got to meet Aaron Rogers, the quarterback and they arranged for him to come and meet me and my nephew and I was the giddiest kid. I was like ‘OH MY GOSH IT’S AARON ROGERS.’ I’m a huge, huge, huge football fan and I love football. I have football parties that go down in history.
TDQ: And one more for fun, if you co-star with any actor on a film who would it be? And would you want it to be a comedy, romance, or drama?
JD: Denzel Washington. It doesn’t matter it could be a silent film, as long as I’m in it with Denzel, I’m good. One of the things off of my bucket list will be checked off!
