It has been announced that Avril Lavigne is entering a union even more peculiar than her marriage to Chad Kroeger. On Good Morning America, the Backstreet Boys revealed that she will be a special guest on the U.S. leg of their “In A World Like This” tour, kicking off this summer.
My little ‘90s girl heart was both aflutter and confused by this announcement. After all, the Avril Lavigne I remember – the skinny tie-wearing pop punker who sang about Sk8er Bois over a decade ago – rejected the pop star life, and would have never joined forces with the likes of the Backstreet Boys. But, it looks time are a’ changing, and she’s ready to accept her place in the pop world. Admittedly, I was never a Backstreet Boys kind of girl (when I was six, it was *NSYNC all day, every day). I’ve got to say, though, this combination seems worth watching. Lavigne and the Backstreet Boys may not be the massive stars they once were, but they have experienced varying degrees of success in recent years. After all, this tour will be the second leg of touring for the Backstreet Boys, and Lavigne has been touring the world to promote her latest self-titled album. We all know that no matter how much time passes, we’ll always be able to recite the lyrics of our favorite childhood songs word-for-word (preferably very loudly among friends). Come May, you can bet that our boy band lovin’ selves will be ready to sing, “Backstreet’s back, all right!”
