After a brutal winter, spring has finally arrived! This means it is officially time to dust off the shorts, tanks, and dresses. But after hiding indoors for the past few months, most of us are far from looking sun-kissed. Although it is tempting to lay outside to tone down the pastiness, it’s no secret that the sun’s rays can be extremely damaging. This is where the magic of self-tanning products comes in handy. Check these out if you’d rather not blend in with the sand on your first beach day of the season.
A tried and true product, Jergen’s Natural Glow Moisturizer has to be one of the best-known sunless tanners out there. I think just about every girl back in high school owned a tube of this, and for good reason. The lotion offers a gradual tan over a 3-day period. Plus, it comes in two shades, fair to medium and medium to dark, in order to cater to your skin tone. It’s ultra affordable, which doesn’t hurt either.
One downside to most tanning products is the telltale scent. Anyone who has ever used one knows the weirdly distinctive, uncategorizable aroma (a boyfriend of mine once asked why I smelled like a Cheez-It . . . maybe not the most accurate description, but still something I’d rather not be compared to). Well have no fear; St. Tropez Self Tan Bronzing Mousse is here to rescue those of us who are sensitive to the smell of self-tanner. This scentless, fast-drying mousse applies extremely evenly and in a deep brown shade to prevent any orange disasters.
Probably one of the quickest self-tanning methods is using a Tantowel Self-Tan Towelette. This option allows you to quickly and cleanly swipe over your body with a colorless towelette for a tan that develops within a few hours. They are fast-drying and leave an even, natural color. Also, there are smaller towelettes offered for just the face region if that’s all you’re interested in covering.
One of my personal favorites has to be the Fake Bake Flawless Self-Tanning Liquid. The product comes in a spray bottle with a mitt to allow an even application. It gives an instant golden tan, but is also buildable after the initial bronze color is washed off. Although this tanner isn’t unscented, I am actually a fan of the smell; it is reminiscent of coconut and isn’t too overpowering to wear out right away.
For those of you who are new to the world of self-tanning or just want something to throw on for a night out, Victoria’s Secret’s Sun Kissed Luminous Body Bronzer might be your best bet. This lotion comes in many great scents and bronzes the skin instantly with a slightly shimmery, golden glow. The color is nicely pigmented, so make sure to apply evenly. Just a word of advice: don’t make the mistake I did and wear this out in the rain.
In order to avoid a patchy, streaky tan, make sure you exfoliate and moisturize well before applying any tanning products. Also, I know it can be tempting to layer up on the product for instant gratification, but don’t go overboard or you will regret it (unless looking like the cast of Jersey Shore is your goal.
