What To Do When Friends’ Friends Aren’t So Friendly

Alright, here’s the situation. You come to one of your really good friend’s event whether it be a party, small hang out at their house, eating out at a restaurant, etc. Your good friend introduces you to their friends that you’ve never met. The introductions are going great until you get a weird vibe from one person. Uh-oh, it happened. You’ve met a friend that’s not so friendly… S.O.S.

When meeting the friend of a friend for the first time, it could happen three ways: the other person is so happy to meet you that you all hit it off right away, the person is jealous that you became friends with the mutual friend first, or the person just ignores you no matter your relation with the mutual friend.

The way I see it, you could take the high road or you could take the Bridesmaids road. If you don’t know what I’m talking about and you’ve never watched the movie, Bridesmaids features two friends competing over one best friend. In the end, they eventually resolve their issues but it’s all laughter in between as we see two people who obviously do not like each other fighting over one person.

In situations like these, I tend to take the high-road but this is always my first reaction:

Shouldn’t they like me? What did I do wrong? This is our first time meeting! If you’re like me, I try to get on their good side. I try to be their best buddy the whole night and pretend like I don’t notice anything at all:

Even though in my friends’ minds they’re thinking:

Next, I engage in a conversation with the person even if it seems like they want me to shut up. I try to find out their likes and dislikes just so we have a moment where we can both go:

It doesn’t always work. I often get the cold shoulder or just a nod. Sometimes I’m on the verge of doing this:

Or I turn to my friends looking at them like this:

Just know that you tried and if they’re still going to be a jerk about it, don’t make it obvious that it’s digging under your skin. The more that you look like you don’t care, they more you’ll start to believe that you don’t care. Not everyone will like you. Sometimes you just gotta shake it off:

Just know that you tried and when you go home that night, let it all out in the car:

But as a personal note, if I ever run into the person in public, this will always be my reaction:

What did you learn from this gif story? Not everyone will like you. Not everyone will think you’re amazing the first time around and you just have to accept it. It’s okay. You really can’t please everyone as much as you’d like. Heck, sometimes I find myself still questioning why certain people don’t like me but then I think about the bigger picture and the fact that I still have OTHER people who like me just for who I am. That’s all I can ask for.
