You may or may not have heard of Kaya Scodelario, but if you haven’t, you surely will soon. As a talented actress and stunning model with a charming British accent, there isn’t much not to love.
I first noticed Scodelario on the premiere episode of the British TV show Skins, playing the rebellious character of Effy Stonem. She started off as the quiet younger sister of Tony Stonem, a.k.a Nicholas Hoult, who you may also recognize from the film Warm Bodies, or as the lucky boyfriend of Jennifer Lawrence. It was not long until Effy started to take over the spotlight, however. By Season 2, Effy became the star of the show, giving rise to much fame for Scodelario. Effy went from the shy girl behind-the-scenes to a defiant teen, as we see her exploring relationships, friendships, drugs, alcohol and family matters. Scodelario suited the role perfectly, captivating audiences by her believability and talent. The character earned her two nominations for Best Actress in 2009 and 2010 at the TV Quick Awards.
Scodelario was born in London in 1992. Before her career on Skins, she had no prior acting experience. At the age of 14, Scodelario auditioned for the show, and was given the fruitful role of Effy. In 2009, she was in her first film, Moon, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, and has starred in many others since, such as Now is Good, featuring Dakota Fanning, and The Truth About Emanuel, where she acts alongside Jessica Biel. Scodelario is also well known for her role in the critically-acclaimed British film Wuthering Heights, based off of the novel by Emily Brontë. Aside from acting, she has put her striking looks to good use, modeling for popular magazines like Teen Vogue, Vogue, Elle UK, Instyle UK and Nylon.
The starlet seems to have no end to her acting career in the near future, either. Scodelario is starring in the upcoming UK action film Tiger House, set to release at the end of 2014. Most notably, however, Scodelario will have a leading role in the highly anticipated film The Maze Runner, coming out in September 2014. The movie is based off of the science-fiction young adult book trilogy by James Dashner. The plot revolves around a boy named Thomas who finds himself in a life-sized maze with no memories of the outside world. He must find ways to put together pieces of his past through clues in the maze. Scodelario acts as the character of Teresa, the first girl to enter this post-apocalyptic community, and works alongside Thomas to attempt to find an escape.
With a range of talents as large as Scodelario’s, there’s a good chance that you’ll be seeing a lot more of her. Keep an eye out for the British beauty; you’ll discover why she’s a big deal in no time.
