The Day of the Dead may sound a bit morbid, but director Jorge Gutierrez has pulled a Tim Burton and turned the subject into a beautiful and celebratory film, The Book of Life, which honors the Mexican holiday. In a press conference presented by 20th Century Fox at San Diego Comic-Con, Gutierrez, along with producer Guillermo del Toro and voice actors Christina Applegate, Channing Tatum and Ron Perlman, spoke about the creation of the film and The Daily Quirk was on hand to deliver the scoop!

Here are just a handful of highlights from the discussion:

  • The glorious reaction of laughter in the room when it was asked what attracted del Toro and Gutierrez to Tatum.
  • Gutierrez’s passion to create a unique form of animation: “We don’t want to look like the other movies, we don’t want to sound like the other movies.”
  • The title of “Captain Latin America” being bestowed upon Tatum’s character in the film.
  • Applegate’s reason for loving voiceover work? No shower necessary.
  • And finally, a rather thoughtful answer from an otherwise comedic Perlman as to why he wanted to do the film.
