With the fall premiere right around the corner, Arrow fans are eagerly counting down the weeks until the action packed show picks up where it left off. The Daily Quirk got in on the Arrow press-only conference held at this year’s Dragon Con in Atlanta and is bringing all the insider info straight to you! Sitting down to answer questions ranging from what their audition process was like to what their secret geek out item is were Paul Blackthorne (Quentin Lance), Caity Lotz (Sara Lance) and fairly recent newcomer to the show, Katrina Law (Nyssa al Ghoul). Blackthorne quickly captivated the press while they waited for the lovely Lotz and Law to appear, taking the opportunity to go into a bit of detail on the journey of Detective Quentin Lance, a character whose development “requires a team of skilled writers.” Lotz and Law entered the room just as questions shifted to the Lance family dynamic, a perfect segue into the developing romance between their two characters. The trio of stars bantered lightly back and forth about Detective Lance’s acceptance of his daughter’s choice in a partner before turning to discuss the fact that neither Law nor Lotz ended up playing the character’s they’d originally auditioned for.
Questions quickly turned from each individual actor’s’ character to what it meant to play characters that are so ingrained in the comic book universe. For Blackthorne, staying true to Detective Lance means choosing to zero in on what the producer’s’ takes are. “We’re shooting a TV show, not writing a comic book,” the actor stated. All cast members agreed that the characters, like actual people, are not definitively good or bad. “[You] can’t put any one of these characters in a box,” Law went on to say. The complexity of the characters is something both cast and crew attribute the success of the show to.
Blackthorne, Lotz and Law continued to happily answer any questions that the press threw their way, touching upon their first experience at Dragon Con, Blackthorne’s photography (the “selfie king” according to Lotz) and raved about their experience working on the set of Arrow.
