Thanks to the history making alternative rock station in Seattle, 107.7 The End – I recently came across the music of a very talented young Irishman, Hozier. The station picks a new artist every week or so to feature on their Discover & Download initiative where listeners can download a song for free of a new artist. Last month, they featured Hozier and his song “Take Me to Church.” The first time I heard the song, it made my hairs stand up with its powerful chorus. I knew I had to research the artist immediately online.

When I started the inevitable Google black hole of Hozier research, I started by watching the music video to “Take Me to Church.” If you love Macklemore’s song, “Same Love” or have strong convictions about Gay Rights, watch this video! I was hooked and started watching/listening to video after video of Hozier’s amazing vocals and eventually created my own Hozier Love playlist on YouTube. His soulful voice and meaningful lyrics combine to make a compelling artist and music that one cannot easily confine to a specific genre. Rather a culmination of various influences from soul to blues to rock.

A few facts about Hozier via Wikipedia: born Andrew Hozier-Byrne on St. Patty’s Day in 1990 in Bray, County Wicklow, Ireland, he’s the son of a musician and went to Trinity College, Dublin, to study music himself until dropping out to record his first demos. Hozier was also a member of Anúna, an Irish choral group, between 2009 and 2012. When asked by MTV about his influences he answered, “My influences are heavily based in the roots of African-American music, so gospel, blues, Delta blues.” Once you listen to his music, it will be hard to believe the man is so young. I can only imagine his art getting better with age!

Hozier is currently on tour in Europe and will be coming to the United States starting in late September through early November. This ardent fan has already purchased her ticket to his Seattle show at the Showbox on Oct. 21! I can’t wait to hear his unbelievable talent live and in person. I am also excited for his first full length self-titled album release that is set for Sep. 22, 2014, and can be pre-ordered now on iTunes. If you want to check out more tour dates or learn more about Hozier, check out his website because he is a big stinking deal.
