Coming up with a list of only five reasons why I’m obsessed with Scandal was hard for me because, as anyone who knows me will tell you, I’m just a little bit (a lot) obsessed with the show. I’ll be the first to tell you that my obsession with the show isn’t normal, but normal is overrated, right? Although I couldn’t list every reason, this list sums up why I’ve remained a faithful Gladiator!
#5 – Nobody is all good or all bad
Everyone has said it and heard it before, but it’s true. You’ll be searching for a long time to find a character on Scandal who is 100 percent good or 100 percent bad. As much as Shonda Rhimes makes me want to hate some characters with everything I have, I don’t think I ever could. There’s Huck, who rips everyone’s heart out with his incredibly emotional scenes and his relationship with his son, but on the other hand, he is a trained assassin and has an addiction to killing people. And there’s Mellie, who was the headstrong First Lady I loved to hate for the first two seasons until we were shown that she was raped by Fitz’s father and suddenly I understood more about her than I ever had; now she’s one of my favorite characters. I’ve yet to find another show where I am so torn about how I feel towards almost all of the characters.
#4 – The Monologues
Rhimes has proven over and over again since her shows have graced our television screens that she is arguably the best monologue writer there is. Almost every character on Scandal has had a gut-wrenching monologue that rips your heart out. Personally, I have to say that my all-time favorite Scandal monologues are Liv’s “Stolen Moments” speech, and honestly any of Mellie’s fabulous rants. Bellamy Young delivers those lines like no one else and brings the words to life on the screen. With every new episode I wait to see which character will deliver another monologue to take me in and emotionally destroy me.
#3 – THE CLOTHES
The clothes on Scandal are a character all their own. Costume Designer Lyn Paolo has brought the clothes on this show to life. She’s given the outfits their own stories and made them a vital part of the show. Women around the world have fallen in love with Liv’s elbow-length gloves, super stylish capes and to-die-for white coats. Scandal’s clothes have become so iconic and popular that clothing store The Limited just launched their very own Scandal collection. Kerry Washington and Paolo were involved in designing the pieces, some of which are almost exactly what Liv wore on the show. Soon we will be seeing pieces enter the collection from Abby, Quinn and Mellie too!
#2 – The cast, crew, and fans
I’m kind of squeezing three into one here, but I feel like this should really be tied for first simply because of just how amazing these people are. The cast of Scandal interacts with their fans on a level that few other TV stars ever have. They play along with us on Twitter, rarely ever miss a Thursday night live-tweet (on either coast) and pour everything they have into their characters.
When I used to watch TV shows I had never really thought about all of the hard work that goes into making a show and all of the people involved. The Scandal crew members took to Twitter and instantly changed that for me. Between George from the props department giving us awesome behind the scenes pictures, Paolo giving us sneak peeks at the clothes and everyone else who works tirelessly behind the scenes, the fans of Scandal are given an inside look at just how much work it takes.
The Scandal fandom can be a scary place at times, but it’s also the place where I’ve found some of the people I hold closest to me. Gladiators are extremely opinionated, but what fun would it be if they weren’t? I can always turn to Gladiators for a hysterical edit, witty comments and a fun-filled Thursday night on the internet.
#1 – Olivia Pope
Olivia Pope is that person that all women secretly wish they could be inside. She’s powerful, beautiful, stylish and lives off of popcorn and wine. Whether it’s cleaning up a body, protecting a family or getting a President re-elected, she’s the one to call. Unfortunately, she’s kind of a hot mess when it comes to her personal life, but that’s what makes the show worth watching. If you’re ever feeling down, practice your Olivia Pope power-strut and down a bottle of wine.
Every week, Scandal manages to keep me on the edge of my seat while simultaneously giving me fashion inspiration and wine suggestions. I have a feeling this is a show that I will be obsessing over as long as it’s on air and I am totally okay with that. I know that a lot of you out there won’t agree with my choices, so sound off in the comments and tell us why you’re obsessed with Scandal!
