The Starz hit series Outlander (based on the book series of the same name by Diana Gabaldon) will return to the small screen in April, and we can’t wait! The series, which has been hailed as a feminist Game of Thrones by many, premiered in August, and Starz has already renewed the series for a second season which will follow the storyline of the second novel in the book series.
The story of Outlander follows Claire Randall, a WWII combat nurse who finds herself transported back in time while visiting Inverness, Scotland, with her husband, Frank. In order to survive, she must learn how to gain the trust of the highlanders, avoid the villainous Black Jack Randall (an ancestor of Frank’s), and discover a way to get back to 1945 and her husband. (The rest of this article contains spoilers for those who haven’t seen the first half of the season.)
When we last saw Claire, she had been captured by Randall and was about to be assaulted before Jamie showed up aiming a gun at him. The first half of the season ended there, leaving us to wonder what happens next. It will be interesting to see how the rest of the scenario pans out. Jamie and Randall are well known to be enemies and have a long history together.
There are a lot of unanswered questions for those of us who haven’t read the books. Toward the end of the last episode before the midseason break, Claire realizes she’s been ignoring her quest to get back to Frank and makes a mad dash for the Standing Stones in an attempt to get back to him. In 1945 Inverness, Frank is searching desperately for Claire. A woman tells him the legend of the Standing Stones and the myths of them making people time travel, but he is reluctant to believe her. As a last ditch effort before giving up his search, Frank visits the stones where Claire disappeared. As they each near the stones, they can hear each other speaking, but Claire is snatched by Randall’s men before she can touch the stones and be transported back to 1945.
Will Claire and Frank be able to reunite? And even if she has another opportunity, will Claire want to go back to 1945 and leave Jamie behind? The two got married in a previous episode as part of a scheme to keep Claire safe from Randall and have discovered that they truly have feelings for each other. If given the chance, would Claire give that up to be reunited with Frank?
It will be exciting to see where the story takes us in the highly-anticipated second half of the season. I’m sure many will agree that April can’t come fast enough.
