Raise your hand if you’re like me and spend way too much money on mani-pedis every other week! I was sick of spending so much time and money on getting my nails done just to have them start chipping off two days later, so I decided Essie’s new Gel Couture polish might be worth a shot! I have to admit that before I even bought the new line of polish I had pretty much already come to the conclusion that it wasn’t going to work and I would be back at the nail salon in three days. Thinking back on every other drugstore nail polish I’ve ever purchased that claimed to last more than 14 days, I couldn’t actually think of one that lasted a full day, never mind two whole weeks!
Let’s start with actually finding the polish…. It took me WEEKS! I ended up ordering it through Amazon and pretty much blindly choosing a color on my computer screen. The new line was just released at the beginning of June so that may be why it was so hard to find, but I went into multiple Target stores as well as drugstores and couldn’t find it anywhere. When I asked associates where it was or if they knew when they would have it in stock I often was looked at like I had three heads… thankfully Amazon was able to have it on my doorstep in two days, and it didn’t disappoint!
The package and bottles themselves were super cute and not the normal nail polish shape or style. It put a fun twist on a new line of polishes that Essie is pushing everywhere! I have to hand it to Essie, the color was spot on. I picked out a color online assuming that whatever showed up to my house would be vastly different from whatever I thought I had chosen, but it was as close as you could imagine. Not to mention, when I put the polish on my nails the color didn’t change a bit!
Fast forward to the actual painting of the nails… the paint didn’t go on quite as smoothly as I had hoped. It almost seemed to start drying before it had even gotten to my nails, and it started to clump up as soon as I put it on. It was tough to get the whole nail covered smoothly because every time I went over a spot more than once the nail polish was going on tougher each time. What I did notice was that after covering the first layer with the gel coat it evened itself out and was nice and smooth. Even the clumps of polish that were stuck on my nails were smoothed out by the gel coat. One of the biggest bonuses of this new polish is that it doesn’t require a UV light, which can be really expensive and time consuming.
Finding the polish and putting it on was the worst part of this whole process; this polish is fantastic. I’ve now been wearing it for about two weeks and have fewer chips and cracks in my polish than I usually do after paying to get them done professionally. Every day I’m surprised when my polish still looks acceptable and hasn’t magically fallen off in the middle of the night. I’ve done nothing different to my nails themselves, but I’ve noticed a huge change in how they look and feel. I’m waiting to see how long I can go without touching my nails before it becomes evident that it’s time to change the polish, and you can bet that I’ll be purchasing another color of the Gel Couture when the time comes!
