Why ‘Dance Moms’ is Horrific…and I Love It

I don’t know if I’ll ever forgive Mallory Walker for getting me hooked on Dance Moms. I started watching the first season on Amazon Prime one day after she mentioned the show to me and now, many seasons in, I still keep tuning in to the perfectly choreographed trainwreck. At first I watched out of a morbid curiosity, having been a dancer myself and wondering how much more outrageous this Abby Lee Miller character could be than my own instructor who liked to call me “left feet” (as in having two of them) and would scream to high heaven if I missed a step (which I did frequently). Over time, I somehow became invested in the ALDC circus despite the many reasons I should find the show appalling: both the scripted and unscripted feuds, grown women going utterly water-throwing and purse-swinging bonkers over competitions, and small children being pitted against each other in what might as well be dances to the death given how serious they all take this stuff. Yet, I’m embarrassed to say those are the very same things that keep me watching.

If you’ve yet to check out an episode of Dance Moms (disclaimer: I feel like I should tell you not to watch given how addictive it can be), let me elaborate a bit more about what makes the show so insane and at the same time so fabulous.

Let’s start by discussing Abby Lee Miller. Abby is the owner of Abby Lee Dance Company and the “choreographer” for the competition teams. Quotes on choreographer because depending on the episode/dance she sometimes has little to do with choreography beyond the creative vision of the number. But none of that is what’s interesting about her. No, what makes Abby interesting to watch is her complete lack of filter and unflinching ability to stare down a crying child. To say her teaching method is “tough love” is like saying the Kardashians have had a little work done.

DM 001

At the same time, Abby really does want the kids to do well and win, if not for their own sake then for her reputation’s. The titular dance moms love to accuse her of sabotaging their kids so they don’t win, and there are times it seems like she doesn’t put as much effort into one kid’s dance as another’s, but I think Abby Lee cares way too much about her brand to ever set up a kid to lose on purpose. Abby wants all the kids to come in first all the time because as she says, if you’re second place…

DM 002

Speaking of the dance moms, their craziness doesn’t end with theories of dance sabotage. Oh no, their flamboyance makes up some of the most entertaining moments of the show, especially in the early seasons when much of the drama surrounded the idea that Abby favors Maddie Ziegler above the other girls (spoiler alert: she did and does).

DM 003

Every week Abbie set Maddie up with the best choreography and an opportunity to use the “Maddie Face” to win over the judges and, early on, every week the dance moms fought about it. Seeing adults get so irate and at times jealous over a child is hilarious, even if you do occasionally feel bad for them, knowing they only want their kids to win like Maddie.

DM 004

Problem is, most of the other kids are lacking one of the many facets that make Maddie a showstopper (no offense kids) and no amount of extra secret private lessons or gifts to Abby would make a difference when it comes to that. But of course they don’t see it that way and instead fight about it all the time, kids be damned.

DM 005

It’s sad when the kids overhear it, and it can even be uncomfortable to watch. But when they’re fighting on their own it can be laugh out loud funny. Their spats can range from calling each other every name in the book, often with bleeping required and finger pointing like this:

DM 006

To passive aggressive moments of awesomeness like this:
DM 007

And when they’re not fighting with each other, they’re fighting with Abby…

DM 008

…who isn’t much better about setting a good example for the kids.

DM 009

It’s not just the fighting that makes the dance moms such eyeball bait. Their scripted get-togethers and non-dance related convos often create great “what am I watching” moments that really leave you asking yourself, “Do they not know this is going to televised?”

Dm 010

In case you’re wondering, there is in fact dancing on Dance Moms, and if you love dance or ever suffered through a class with a teacher like Abby, they really are the best parts of the show.

DM 011

The kids are talented and their camaraderie is adorable.

DM 012

Even if some of them aren’t really as into as others…

DM 013

And some are a little too intense.

DM 014

The whole show is a big bunch of crazy, with a sprinkle of dancing and a lot of drama.
Yes, in many ways Dance Moms is horrific and I absolutely love it.

5 Television characters I wish I was friends with…

I love my television friends. Wait, what? Am I really calling those fictional characters friends? Yes I am, and I’m not even ashamed of it. Think about it: why do we love television series? We like them because we recognize ourselves and our own lives in them, we like them because they’re great entertainment, we like them because they make us laugh and cry, we like them because they’re a way of escapism. But we LOVE them because we feel a strong bond with the characters. The characters become our friends. That’s why we are devastated when one of our favorite TV shows has come to an end: our friends are taken away from us. Luckily, we are able to watch series again and again which gives us the opportunity to fan the fire of our fictional friendships.

Below you can find my list of “TV characters I wish I were friends with” and why this is the case…

Celebrity Crush: Tom Hardy

The world has gone Tom Hardy crazy, and I am no exception. Over the past few years, he has started sneaking his way into just about every popular movie. He was in two of the eight movies up for Best Picture at the Oscars, and was nominated for best actor in a supporting role, thanks to his outstanding performance in The Revenant.

Why is Tom Hardy so popular, you ask? The most obvious answer is that his acting skills are impeccable. He can play any role and completely knock it out of the park. Unstable twins (yes, two of him) taking over the London crime scene? No problem. A lying, vicious, self-centered wild man making his way through blizzards in the uncharted wilderness? Easy. A Boston bartender who turns out to be a murderer but still convinces you to have a soft spot for him in the end? He can do that, too (or maybe that was just me).

There’s also no denying the charm of his British accent, and the looks certainly don’t hurt. He can pull off a clean cut look better than most guys out there, but can rock a beard even better. The tattoos are just an added bonus.

Did you know that he’s also a dedicated husband and father? It doesn’t get much better than Tom in all his glory holding his mini-me… except for him holding puppies. That comes pretty close.

If you somehow don’t have a major crush on Tom Hardy already, do yourself a favor and watch every movie that he’s ever been in. You’ll thank me later.

What’s the Big Deal About…Maisie Williams

If you’re a Game of Thrones fan then you’ve known about Maisie Williams for a while now. But recently, she has gotten a lot of attention online for being a beautiful lively actress. As a huge GoT fan and an even bigger fan of her character Arya, I just adore Maisie. She is one of the most fun actresses I have ever followed on Instagram. Here’s a little peek at the wonderful Maisie.

Here’s a look at Maisie’s new love in her life, her adopted dog Sonny:

And don’t even get me started on her fashion sense. I am beyond jealous of how many different styles she can pull off.

She’s all about supporting other women and is very active in the Like A Girl campaign.

All in all, Maisie is one of the most positive celebrities on social media today. She admires her character Arya just as much as the audience does and she tries really hard to make the world a better place with her position as a celebrity.

What’s the Big Deal About…Jane Austen?

I only recently got bit with the Janeite bug. I know, I’m late to this party, but pass me a mug of mulled wine and I’ll explain here by the crackling fire just how I got here and why I think I’ll stay a while.

I have always liked watching Pride and Prejudice. Lizzy’s independent state of mind reminds me of my own, and while she eventually ends up with the love of her life—who just so happens to be insanely rich—it is her pursuit of what is right by her own standards while she stays true to her family’s needs for upward mobility in a society that seems stagnant that wins my heart.

It wasn’t until I took a Jane Austen class, though, that I realized how much I loved looking further into this world so tightly wound around social structures Austen masterfully both upheld and questioned. Reading her works as a 27-year-old woman helped me not only understand the world I live in, but also how we got here, and why it’s important to understand the rules by which I am expected to live in my own society.

For Example…

In Northanger Abbey, Catherine’s naïve and gullible personality, paired with Mrs. Allen’s relentless selfishness and materialistic outlook as well as Isabella’s blatant disregard of her friend, annoy me. Also, what is up with her mother’s goodbye? The whole mother-daughter relationship in Austen’s novels is a real problem, but Catherine’s farewell discussion with her mom is straight out of an etiquette lesson book.

It wasn’t until the second reading that I realized I was supposed to feel this way, and it was because of this feeling that I felt compelled to write about it—to join the conversation.

While living in a world that is continually shaped by the gravitas of pop culture, I began to understand the navigation and intelligent societal dancing in Austen’s works, more choreographed than any of the balls within them.

Catherine’s character (clearly a response to Austen’s society’s understanding of women’s response to their surroundings and the necessity to keep them from anything that might ruin them) is exemplary of female prevail, proving Isabella’s strategies for social mobility are no match for Catherine’s strength of character within in her own growth. Isabella’s dramatic behavior is repeatedly met with Catherine’s honest, “Nah, girl. I don’t know what you’re on about” style of response, and this clash of characterization of femininity in Austen’s novel shows that this whole female/lady thing is totally bogus and just a performance.

While Henry Tilney is by no means the perfect mate, repeatedly mocking her intelligence, I see his promotion of her use of critical thinking skills ignites Catherine’s pursuit of not only her love for Henry, but also an appreciation and acceptance of her individual thought process she has possessed throughout her life.

And then there is…

Mansfield Park. What a shitshow. This novel is another reason that Austen both infuriates and excites me. I cannot stand any character here. I literally hate them all. BUT, is that not a sign of a good novel? When analyzing this text, I had to ask myself why I hated these characters.

The bottom line is this: Mrs. Norris is terrible and Fanny Price is my worst nightmare. She is just as manipulative and strategic as Mary Crawford, but Fanny’s mode of operation is more dangerous because she subscribes to the code of conduct that society condoned.

Mary is made the villain by challenging social norms—she is a sexualized villain. However, is she not looking for the same thing as Fanny? Is she not seeking a husband, but rather than the quietly, and might I add creepily, way that Fanny has mastered, Mary’s conduct lays open for conversation the rules by which she is governed in her society.

So what?

Before you walk home from this pub gathering, stumbling in my rambling speech, know that I am making three points here, and my first point is this: Jane Austen’s works were revolutionary because of the ways that she sheds light on women’s positioning in society—the rules they must navigate in order to obtain personal fulfillment. Her heroines are rewarded with marriage which creates a mask of conventionality, but how they reach their social salvation from eternal spinsterhood is a thinly veiled trope of female empowerment to navigate the society in which they live.

These characters are not only brilliant; they create their own happiness in unique and interesting ways. What’s more is the relationship between females and their cultivation of female bonding in order to manifest their own empowerment—oh, the drama! There’s nothing like some early 19th century gossip!

Their fight for independent thought and the autonomy to create a life of their own is what makes Austen’s heroines stand out and stick around in exciting and fun ways that Mr. Collins can’t latch onto.

Remakes and Reimaginings

So, you might ask, why does this matter? Why should I care about Jane Austen’s works when she is long gone and I can read someone’s works that I can actually see and feel having a conversation with my society? Well, because she is too. Believe it or not, Austen’s works are still alive and thriving. Bridget Jones’ Diary is coming out with another installment (I can’t wait!), Pride and Prejudice and Zombies just hit the silver screen, and there is a long history of remakes and reimaginings.

Literary critic Deidre Lynch calls explores Jane Austen’s “social machine” in her work, and it is this duplication of her society and consequently her works within new societies that makes Austen’s mark still relevant. She is reworked, remade, reimagined in new and exciting ways. Austenland is basically me when I went to England—though, I didn’t return home with a gorgeous British boyfriend, but that’s neither here nor there.

My second point is that Austen is and always will be remade for the current time because the issues she tackles and the characters she employs work to address social constraints and performativity within them—what binds us to the rules of convention and how our identities are shaped.

What is love? What is marriage? What is femininity? What is masculinity? Austen’s representations of these inquiries are vastly different from today’s, but the questions are still being addressed. If only love looked more like Colin Firth leaving a lake like the winner of a Darcy wet t-shirt contest.

Janeites Unite

While we don’t send pregnant women to the countryside out of humiliation, we live in a society that still slut-shames. Just recently Kim Kardashian was shamed for posting a naked picture online (her reply to the haters was pretty genius, BTW). I can’t believe we are still having this conversation. Who cares?! #FreeTheNipple

We don’t send women to their rooms if they are having an emotional episode like Marianne’s complete breakdown in Sense and Sensibility, but we do look down upon emotional over-sharing, often calling people crazy or hormonal for feeling feelings and crying over them.

We have shows like The Bachelor, The Bachelorette, and Millionaire Matchmaker because “It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife” (Austen, Pride and Prejudice). This notion of class, marriage, and mobility in society is still hounding us as we watch TV that, while incredibly addicting, perpetuates ideas Austen grappled with in her works.

Jane Austen might roll in her grave if I compare her works to today’s most famous celebs and issues, but that was the society in which she lived. Reimagining Austen’s works in my world, to make them relevant today, entails attacking the issues within them: female autonomy, identity creation, and self-fulfillment. These issues have not been remedied and are still being discussed daily.

We have reached my third point and why I love her works: the issues in her works, the ability to explore and create a self that is personal and not expected while accepting that there is a social structure within which we live, is still and always will be relevant so long as identity and its construction is an issue in society.

So, that’s my Janeite manifesto. I love her stuff and I think we should all read it and talk about it at our next pub gathering. Who’s in?

I want to know why you do or don’t like Jane Austen. Share with me in the comments below, but if you don’t like her, I’m just warning you, you’re wrong (I’m kidding, but not really).

Hey, before you leave the party, pass me another mug of mulled wine, would ya?

Celebrity Crush: Former ‘The Vampire Diaries’ Star Nina Dobrev

Celebrity Crush: Former ‘The Vampire Diaries’ Star Nina DobrevAbout a month ago I did a celebrity crush article on Ian Somerhalder, one of the stars of Vampire Diaries. But today I want to focus on his co-star and ex-girlfriend, Nina Dobrev. There are very few celebrities I look up to because celebrity idolization can be pretty toxic, but Nina is one of the most beautiful and genuine people I have ever seen. So let’s talk about why Nina is the best.

To start off, how absolutely stunning is she? I would legitimately kill for her eyebrows and bone structure. Also, her fashion sense is impeccable.

She’s a huge Harry Potter nerd! It’s always awesome when celebrities show us how obsessed they can be with something, too.

She’s the total opposite of a mean girl, letting you know you can sit with her.

Her and her girlfriends are absolute #friendgoals.

And above all, she’s not afraid to be silly and have fun. Fun and happiness is a huge part of her life and she does not hide that.

If I was a celebrity, Nina Dobrev is who I would strive to be like. She’s gorgeous, funny, and sweet. She doesn’t try to maintain an air of exclusive classiness like a lot of celebrities. She shows her fans that she’s human too and sometimes has bad days. She encourages people to value your friends and mental health in order to lead a happy and fulfilling life.

‘Gilmore Girls’ Revival: What We Most Want to See

As a longtime Gilmore Girls fan, I reacted to news of the upcoming Netflix revival of the show, in the form of four mini-movies, with a mix of disbelief (Really? After all this time?), relief (Finally Amy Sherman-Palladino can finish the series the way she intended!), and, of course, extreme excitement. Fans have been buzzing about every new casting announcement and analyzing what it might mean for the story.

Personally, I’ll be happy with literally anything. New Gilmore Girls is new Gilmore Girls, and I have all the faith in the world that ASP will come through with something worth watching. That said, of course there are certain things I hope are addressed with the revival, and other things that I just would really love to see.

Rory doesn’t end up with Dean or Logan

I don’t think there’s much chance of this, but it’s still on my list because if Rory did end up with Dean or Logan, it would be horribly depressing. Everyone has their opinions on Rory’s various boyfriends, but to me it doesn’t make sense that she’d find long term happiness with Dean, and I just really don’t like Logan. So yeah, I’m biased. I don’t really think she’ll end up with Jess, either, but if she did…I wouldn’t be mad about it. At all.

What happens when someone uses a cell phone at Luke’s Diner

I just really want to know if Luke is still enforcing the no cell phones rule. I assume he probably is, but HOW? It’s got to be much harder in 2016 than it was in 2006.

Kirk is still exploring new job opportunities

The Stars Hollow townies, and especially Kirk, are the special spices in the Gilmore Girls formula that make it so interesting and endearing. With news of Sean Gunn joining the revival cast, we know Kirk will make an appearance, but I hope that he’s the same ol’ Kirk. I want to see the version of Kirk that’s always got a new odd job and is both bizarre and beautifully clueless. I don’t think it would be right if Kirk was suddenly the picture of maturity and stability.

Luke and Lorelai get some resolution

When Gilmore Girls ended, the Luke/Lorelai situation was left (probably intentionally) very ambiguous. No thank you. Sort that situation out one way or the other, please! Either they get together and stay together or they are definitely, definitively apart for good. But hopefully if that’s the case they are still best frenemies.

Kwan and Steve get some screentime

I generally could not care less about kids, but for some reason I am just itching to know what Lane & Zach’s twins, Kwan and Steve, are up to these days! Are they musically-inclined like their parents? Or do either of them take after Mrs. Kim? Maybe one of each? There are just so many funny little directions this situation could take, and I would love to see it as a small story throughout the revival episodes.

The clothes are fantastic enough to inspire a tumblr

The Gilmore Girls always had slightly eclectic fashion sense, with Lorelai never shying away from a loud pattern or low cut, and Rory preferring mostly simple, classic clothes with an occasional quirk thrown in. I’m excited to see these ladies’ updated looks and I’m hoping for an odd but fashionable blend of items worthy of one of those tumblr pages that tells you where you can, for the low price of $1200, purchase a dress like Lorelai’s.

Richard gets a fitting tribute

I’m confident this will happen – ASP clearly loved Edward Hermann and was deeply affected by his death, so I know she will address it appropriately on the show. I’m just hopeful that they are able to find the right balance in tone so that the loss of Richard is important and given the time it deserves, but doesn’t dominate too much of the storyline.

The last four words are worth the hype

If you’re a fan of Gimore Girls, you’ve no doubt heard the legend of the last four words. For many years, even before the show originally ended, ASP had the idea in her head for what she wanted the last four words of the series to be. When Sherman-Palladino left the show before its final season, those four words became legend. Would we ever hear them? Well, now we’re going to, and now I just hope they can live up to the huge expectation that has been built up around them.
This list could go on forever, because in reality I could get excited about seeing just about anything related to Gilmore Girls. Just seeing all my favorite characters back together again on screen will be amazing regardless, but if the revival checks off the items on my list, even better!

What’s the Big Deal About…Chipotle?

Chipotle has been getting a lot of heat recently due to E. Coli outbreaks stemming from a few of their locations, but the company has been trying hard to earn the trust of its loyal customers back. For a lucky few, this even meant free burritos if they texted the word “raincheck” on the same day that the brand temporarily shut down to hold national meetings regarding food safety. Despite the recent blips, Chipotle still has the hearts of many. So, what is the big deal about Chipotle, anyway?

Fast but fresh

Fast food restaurants have a bad rap. Most ingredients are frozen, meals are rarely made to order, and have been sitting under heat lamps for sometimes hours by the time your meal is in front of you. Chipotle does it a little differently; you watch them assemble your meal right in front of you and add in the ingredients as you list them off. This way, there’s no mystery as to how long your food has been sitting around and what really went into it.

Fair prices

One of the redeeming qualities of fast food chains is that they’re typically inexpensive, and Chipotle definitely fits that bill. Although it’s true that you’re not going to find an extensive dollar menu or two-for-$2 deals, the prices are more than fair for what you get. I can say with certainty that I’ve never left dissatisfied.

You have control over your meal

There’s a basic menu to guide you, but beyond that, what goes into your meal is up to you. This means you control how mild or spicy your salsa is, what kind of veggies are mixed in, and how healthy (or unhealthy) it all turns out to be. Plus, there are tons of options, so you can switch up your order and try something new every time you go.

Fresh ingredients

Chipotle’s website boasts that their ingredients are farm sourced, non-GMO, and all around fresh. This isn’t something you’re going to find at many self-proclaimed fast food joints. Having the peace of mind that the vegetables you’re eating are farm fresh and the chicken isn’t total mystery meat is pretty comforting.

Their guacamole recipe is online

Yes, we all know the guac costs a little extra, but did you know Chipotle posts their recipe online? Now you’ll never have to serve up some mediocre dip at your parties again. I’d say that’s reason enough to love a restaurant.

So, what do you think the big deal is about Chipotle? Leave a comment below and let us know why you love it!

Ink It Up: The 5 Best Celeb Tattoos

Ink It Up: The 5 Best Celeb TattoosA survey in 2012 showed that 1 in 5 adults has a tattoo. But celebrities get a lot more freedom in that department. It seems like every time a big celebrity gets a tattoo, it’s all over the news and impossible to miss. So here are just a few awesome tattoos we’ve seen on our favorite celebrities.

  1. Rihanna

In September 2012, Rihanna got a chest piece tattoo as a tribute to her late grandmother. The internet was very excited about this tattoo because it caused Rihanna to pose shirtless for a lot more photos. When tweeting the picture of her new tattoo, Rihanna wrote:

The places include Cambodia, Ethiopia, Namibia, Vietnam, and France. The seventh line of the list tattoo is the coordinates of her husband Brad Pitt’s birthplace in Oklahoma.

  1. Cara Delevingne

This star has become hugely popular recently as a Victoria Secret model and an actress in Paper Towns. Happy New Year! Let’s start off a new year with a rant. Or.. More like a favor? To Disney! Celebrity Crush: Ian Somerhalder of ‘The Vampire Diaries’

In my sophomore year of high school, I had grown tired of all my friends at the lunch table raving about some show about vampires. I finally caved and went home that day and pulled the show up online.

This began my week or so long binge-watching of the very popular CW show The Vampire Diaries. I hadn’t expected to fall in love with the show. Honestly, from listening to friends talk about it, I expected some cheesy romance show where the characters happened to be vampires. However, the drama combined with comedy and very likeable and relatable characters drew me in.

But the number one reason for my addiction?

Ian Somerhalder and his amazing acting as his character Damon Salvatore. I can rant and rave about Ian and his character Damon for days, but let’s just stick with the basics.

Let’s just start off with how handsome he is.

Not only is Damon charmingly sarcastic, he’s also portrayed by the beyond attractive Ian. It’s a little ridiculous.

He’s also very into promoting The Vampire Diaries by posting awesome pictures from the set.

Outside of the show, he is very active in saving animals from cruelty and helping anyway he can.

Overall, Ian Somerhalder was the best thing to happen to The Vampire Diaries because his good looks and charm have been bringing all the girls to the yard for seven seasons now. If you haven’t given the show a chance, take my word for it and begin your Netflix binge right now. You will not regret it.

Celebrity Crush: Kerry Washington

I’ve got a girl crush and I am in no way ashamed. If you’ve ever watched any piece of Kerry Washington’s work you’ll know why in an instant. Not only is she one of the most beautiful people on this planet, but she’s one of the most talented as well.

If you’re not familiar with Washington, you might know her as Olivia Pope on ABC’s Scandal. She plays the high-profile Washington “fixer” who just happens to fall in love with the married President. If you haven’t seen it, you should start watching now. And if you’re looking for an example of Washington’s talent, you should take a look at her monologues from the show. INCREDIBLE.

And if television isn’t your thing and you’re more into movies, she has plenty of those to go around. Check her out in Ray and Django: Unchained, where she played wife to Jamie Foxx in both, or in the early 2000s hit Save the Last Dance. Regardless of what film you choose, I promise you’ll be impressed.

I am obsessed with Kerry Washington’s sense of style, as is most of the fashion world. I can’t say that I’ve ever seen an outfit that I didn’t like on her. She is absolutely stunning and I’m pretty certain she has the ability to wear a trash bag and still look like complete perfection. All you have to do is open up any weekly tabloid or fashion magazine and she’ll be right on top of the best-dressed list every week!

If none of these aspects put you half in love with Kerry Washington as I am, maybe her personality will do the trick. When watching her do panels for Scandal or her other pieces of work, she’s loud and peppy and always has a smile on her face! I can only imagine that she’s a person that makes everyone around her want to smile, and what’s a better trait in a person than that?  Her charities include the Allstate Purple Purse Foundation which combats domestic violence, as well as the Boys & Girls club, and a Turnaround Arts, a government program to help low-performing schools through the use of the visual and performing arts.

Washington spends more of her time doing good for others than she spends on herself, and that is the true reason for my girl crush! If you can think of any reasons I didn’t list for why we love Kerry, let me know in the comments!
