5 (Budget Friendly) Summer Beauty Essentials

Budget Summer Beauty

Summer is my favourite season of the year and I know I’m not the only one who feels that way! This year in England we’ve been having more of a “real” summer so far and as the shorts and dresses have come out, so have lots of summery cosmetics. Here are the five essential summer beauty products that you should add to you must haves list this season.

With the heat wave weather, it’s key to have a nice, refreshing fragrance. Body Shop’s Body Mists are really good. They are “gentle and refreshing” and come in “fruity, zesty, floral and even nutty fragrances.” There is a variety of choice to choose from. The fragrances are coconut, strawberry, vanilla, satsuma, mango, pink grapefruit, shea, brazil and moringa. Give them a try and you will smell fantastic all day!

BB creams seem to be very popular at the moment with most brands having one. I decided to try Maybelline since I think it’s a really wonderful brand and their foundations are amazing. Maybelline Dream Pure BB Cream, which is for oily skin, is very good find. It is an 8-in-1 BB Cream that helps conceal redness, contains SPF 15, is oil free, hydrates, mattifies, targets blackheads, smoothes and evens skin tone.

Even if you enjoy the sun it may not be your friend. If you don’t tan easily like me, a good solution to look more colourful is to use Rimmel London Natural Bronzer. The natural bronzer adds a nice shine and the velvet soft texture adds a natural bronzed look. It gives a natural warm sun-kissed glow and lasts a long time.

Another great summery beauty product is lip gloss!  Model Co Lip Glosses are amazing, but also practical. Each lip gloss has a mirror on it so that you don’t need to go to bathroom to re-apply. The lip gloss smells amazing and nearly edible.

To finish of off my essential summer beauty products list, I have to mention Accessorize’s pale nail varnish. Pale nail varnish colours are very stylish at the moment and go with most outfits. Accessorize has various shades of pale varnish pale blue, pink, yellow, orange and purple, and they’re all reasonable priced!

So those are my five essential summer beauty products, what are yours?

The easiest makeup routine starts with BB cream!

When you hear  the term BB cream, I think the two most common responses are, “Can’t live without it!” or “Never heard of it!” Now that I’ve discovered it, my response is most definitely “can’t live without it”! If your response is never heard of it, you’re missing out! I’m sure that when you hear about what it does, your response will quickly cycle from “I need to have that” to “I can’t live without it” too!

I first came upon this wonderful quick and easy 5 in 1 formula when perusing Smashbox cosmetics (I am a huge fan of the brand, especially their Halo Hydrating Perfecting Powder, a 2010 Beauty Award Winner! I’ll save that awesomeness for another time though.) on Sephora’s website. Once I find a product I like, I tend to sit for hours and look at all the products the brand sells and their reviews. Since my skin is so sensitive, as in I am even sensitive to the products that claim to be for “sensitive skin,” it is very hard for me to just try any product and not breakout or get a rash.

I happened to click on Smashbox Camera Ready BB Cream without knowing exactly what a BB Cream is supposed to do for you. At a quick glance, I saw about 3 eye-catching pros that made me want to read more about it:

  • SPF 35 (ladies, you must wear it everyday no matter if you live in Seattle, Washington or Laguna Beach, California).
  • Oil Controlling
  • Reduces fine line and wrinkles after only four weeks ( I am not getting any younger, so why not start early)!

The next five words sealed the deal for me: Moisturizes, Primes, Perfects, Controls Oil, and Protects! A product that can do all of that combined, to me, equals about 20 more minutes of sleep in the morning and less clog filling products.

Smashbox first heard about BB creams when makeup artists in the photo studios on location in Asia found out it was the best tool to perfect the skin. It uses “progressive” coverage, meaning you can achieve different levels of coverage depending on on how you wear it. All I use is a little concealer under my eyes, then a few dabs of the BB cream, rub it in and I am set for the day. When I say set for the day, I mean it literally lasts me all day. On days where I need more coverage, I top it off with the Smashbox Powder, mentioned above.

There are plenty of Beauty Balm Creams out there ranging from about $9 – $126 USD. Smashbox’s BB is $39 USD and worth every penny. Unlike some other BB Creams, Smashbox’s version is appropriate for all skin types, free of fragrance (I dislike the smell of flowers on my face all day), dermatologist tested and non-acnegenic ( meaning not likely to cause or promote acne). I have been using it for a month, with no breakouts and my skin appears more radiant. BB creams that are sold at your local drugstore such as Loreal, Garnier, Aveeno, just to name a few may work just as good as the higher price ones, but read the fine print, some claim to be BB Cream’s but don’t have all the same benefits with others simply say they are “like” BB creams without actually being one. I would look for the main five words I mentioned about one label before making a decision and of course, purchase according to your budget or brand preference.
