Is the ‘Doctor Who’ revival still the same 10 years later?

I will always remember the day I met my Doctor. I was having a really bad day, and wasn’t in the mood for doing much of anything. I came home from class, plopped on the couch, turned on the TV and just started flipping channels, staring blankly at the screen. Finally, I reached channel 101, BBC America. I stopped for a moment, recognizing the show as Doctor Who, a fan-favorite on the interwebs. I saw this strange man wearing a bowtie, lanky and wide-eyed, explaining to a frightened father and son that the child’s fear of his cupboard was legitimate. You see, during his time exploring wonders of the universe beyond anyone’s wildest dreams, the Doctor had found that monsters are, indeed, real. Continue reading

Top ride ideas for the new BBC-themed amusement park

My first reaction to the news that a BBC-themed amusement park is in the works was pure, unadulterated excitement. My second reaction was to try and figure out exactly how much money I would need to visit the park in its proposed location of Kent, England. The answer is probably too much for a person who still hasn’t managed a visit to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Continue reading

THE GRAHAM NORTON SHOW (Image Credit: PA)

It’s no secret that I love all things celebrity and Hollywood. I may not be nearly as obsessed as I once was, but I do love a good celebrity interview, especially with my favorites. And you guys, Graham Norton is the show for that. Continue reading

10 Gifs or Less: Getting to Know ‘Doctor Who’

DOCTOR WHO (Image Credit: BBC America)

DOCTOR WHO (Image Credit: BBC America)

With the arrival of a new series and a new leading man in Doctor Who comes a fresh batch of Whovians who are simultaneously scratching their heads and grinning ear-to-ear at the madness upon which they have stumbled. First of all – welcome! Second, don’t let the fandom scare you too much (it scares me sometimes, I’ll be honest).  Jumping into a nearly 51-year-old show can feel intimidating, especially when the actors, writers, storylines and even the genres of the episodes change regularly. But never fear – a fellow Whovian is here. You’ll notice that while this show is in a constant state of transition, at its core it really is just the same software with different casing. I rang in the New Year as any good nerd should, by sitting on my couch and watching the third installment of the hit BBC crime drama Sherlock. Seven months later, BBC One rocked the world by announcing via Twitter that Sherlock’s hiatus after Season 3 wouldn’t be quite as long as the gaps between the previous seasons — a special will air before three new episodes. “Shooting on the #Sherlock special will begin in January 2015, with the series shooting later next year. #221back,” read one of the tweets. Catch up on your Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and see if you can guess which stories will be adapted for the new season. For now, let’s look back and revel in the mysteries of the deerstalker-wearing sleuth of 221B Baker Street. Continue reading

Even before I had BBC America, I liked to watch a lot of shows like Luther and Doctor Who that aired on the network. So, when the channel started releasing original programming, I was really excited. Orphan Black is one of those shows, so when I moved into a new apartment with new television service that included BBC America I made sure to DVR their re-airing of the show. And boy, am I glad I did. Continue reading

The BBC hit show Doctor Who is about to hit a milestone not many shows reach. On Saturday, Nov. 23, the show will celebrate the 50th Anniversary of its first episode. The pilot of the original series aired on Nov. 23, 1963, and the “classic” series continued to run until 1989 with a TV movie made in 1996. In 2005, the series was relaunched and has been airing since with no end in sight. Continue reading

Signs you might be an Anglophile…

It’s been two years since I spent a semester abroad in England, and I miss it every day. Like an ever increasing number of Americans (and other nationalities), I am afflicted with Anglophilia. Okay, maybe afflicted isn’t the best word. It’s not like Anglophilia’s a disease or anything, just a perfectly healthy interest in England and English culture.
Of course, there are varying degrees of Anglophilia, but it’s much more than liking British accents. Continue reading
