There’s no denying that the holidays are supposed to be some of the happiest times of the year. The lights, music and all around “cheer” are supposed to fill your heart with nothing but joy. The tricky thing is, that joy can sometimes be replaced with dread if you’re preparing to spend the holiday alone, or rather, single. Luckily, being single has advantages, many of which translate right into the holiday season. This year, I challenge you to catch yourself under the mistletoe. You may even realize you’re actually the perfect date to your own holiday party. What follows is a Singles Holiday Guide to surviving the holiday blues. Continue reading
As far as I’m concerned, a Gilmore Girls marathon is welcome at any time of the year. However, anyone who’s a tried and true fan of the show knows that one of Lorelai’s most favorite things is snow, so what better time to catch up on a few episodes than during the holiday season? Check out this ranked list of the Gilmore Girls Christmas episodes and be sure to get snowed in with Netflix this winter! Continue reading
It’s that time of year again, when one of the most daunting questions on your mind is, “What gifts do I get my friends and family for the holidays?” Some call it taboo, but re-gifting no longer has to feel like a shameful act. The Daily Quirk had the chance to speak with national manner and etiquette expert Diane Gottsman to bring you answers to the questions you’ve been wondering about re-gifting, but may have been too afraid to ask. Remember being little and impatiently sitting through dozens of Thanksgiving themed crafts in anticipation of when the red and green colored construction paper would finally be taken out in your classroom? Or how you would beg your mom to start the Christmas countdown early because you just could NOT wait for Santa to come? Apparently, it seems like many people do based on the fact that the Christmas season seems to arrive earlier and earlier every year. It’s as if the entire country has reverted to an eager child that just cannot wait for the big day to get here. Yes, much of this has to do with consumerism, but for the sake of keeping things festive, we’ll turn a blind eye and pretend it’s really all just about the joy and love that is the true meaning of Christmas. Christmas-time is like no other time of the year. The catchy carols, the breathtaking decorations and the cheerful spirit — how could anyone not love the Christmas season? Continue reading
It may not officially be “winter” just yet, but the holiday season has kicked into high gear. What’s better to do on a cold, gloomy day than cozy up on the couch and read a book? Below are a few of my favorite winter and holiday-themed young adult novels to help get you in the spirit Continue reading
Merry Christmas everyone! this really is the most magical time of the year, everywhere you look there are twinkling lights and the promise of indulgence. I think this season, above all others is one where homemade treats and gifts are most appreciated.
These fun stained glass cookies are nothing like the mass produced snacks in stores, and look absolutely beautiful hidden among branches of a Christmas tree, ready for excited guests to discover and claim. I like to make the dough in advance and stash it in the fridge (for up to 3 days) or freezer, ready to whip up a quick batch of these when I’m expecting guests. The whole house is filled with the gorgeous scent of spices, and the from defrosted takes less than an hour to go from fridge to tree.
Serve with milk or mulled wine for a fantastic ice breaker for any gathering. Continue reading
Though Season 4 of Downton Abbey has yet to reach televisions in the U.S., the traditional Christmas special will still air as planned – and from what we’ve seen already, there are multiple questions we hope will be answered in it. For those who are die-hard fans and have yet to see Season 4, beware of what is to come! It might be just enough information to be a slight spoiler for you. Continue reading
The holiday season has officially arrived and for those with jobs, a relaxing break is definitely due. As the days off from work are fast approaching, so is the annual company holiday party! In the same way that family and friends recognize the holidays with a celebration, the workplace does too.
Office parties can certainly serve as a good time what with all the opportunities to bond with your boss and socialize with your fellow employees. However, the company holiday party is the last social event before everyone in the office departs and you definitely don’t want to start off a new year by having made a bad last impression in the previous one.
Start off the season by giving a gift to yourself, the gift of knowing the top 5 things you should never do at your company holiday party: Continue reading
Christmas is almost here, but it’s not too late to buy a Christmas tree. Although the convenience of a fake tree is tempting, there’s something genuinely special about a live tree. Maybe it’s the fresh scent or the process that goes into picking it, but nothing beats a real Christmas tree. In case you’ve never shopped for a live tree before – or if you just haven’t had good luck with tree shopping in the past – The Daily Quirk is offering some simple advice on how to find, pick and maintain your dazzling new centerpiece for the holiday season. The Kardashians shared their 2013 family Christmas card and no matter how you feel about the socialite family, I think we can all agree that the photo is a little odd.
I happen to be one of the people who is rather indifferent to this group, but when I’ve happened upon their Christmas cards in the past, I remember liking them. I thought they were fun and pretty and kind of a really expensive version of something that a typical family would be doing. After I saw this one, I thought I’d take a look at past cards and see how they all compare. Continue reading
I’m a sucker for Christmas and the Holiday spirit. Each year, this time of year, I’m the happiest girl alive. Christmas fairs, hot cocoa, sledding, Christmas presents, tree decorations, fireworks, snow ball fights, making snow puppets, resolutions, Christmas music, good food, happy people, and basically everything else associated with the holidays season can count on my enthusiasm. Therefore, I absolutely love Christmas and New Year’s TV specials. I think they bring out the best in TV series. Sure, they’re often over the top cliché and kitschy, but who doesn’t secretly love drama, merry Christmas songs, and kissing in the snow. Who doesn’t want to see some of our TV families living up to good old Christmas and New Year’s values such as forgiveness, resolutions, and peace? Who doesn’t love the coziness of the Christmas tree standing tall and proud next to the fireplace? Who doesn’t love wearing woolly Christmas sweaters and being thrilled because you can finally unwrap your Christmas gifts. I admit I do. And to convince you, I’ll share my list of marvelous Christmas and New Year’s specials with you. I’m not saying that these are my all-time favorite TV shows, but they do have great Christmas/Holidays episodes and these days, that counts for something! For those who’re not to be convinced: haters gonna hate… Continue reading
