Holy Dragon Con, Batman! Over Labor Day weekend, thousands of fans from every type of fandom gathered in Atlanta, GA to show off their passion for cosplay and all things geek. In it’s 28th year, this four-day con stretched over six individual buildings and saw more than 52,000 TARDIS piloting, one-ring hunting, “Let It Go” singing, Goomba crushing fans from all over the country. Yesterday at San Diego Comic-con, Kevin Frazier hosted a panel with the cast and crew of the hit CBS show Under the Dome, based on a Stephen King novel. As the cast was being introduced it was noted that Rachelle Lefevre and Alexander Koch were dressed appropriately in cosplay outfits for the panel. Lefevre dressed as Battlestar Galactica’s Starbuck and Koch as The Walking Dead’s Daryl. Lefevre also made sure to tease youngster Colin Ford as he was introduced as a teen dream by pretending to be a flummoxed female fan vying for his attention. The San Diego Comic-Con schedule of events may be jam-packed, but there will always be the wiggle room to squeeze in a few last minute surprise speakers. One of the biggest surprises to come out of this year’s convention was the appearance of Christopher Nolan and Matthew McConaughey, the director and head actor of the highly anticipated film, Interstellar. When it was announced just a few months ago that NYC’s Jacob Javits center would be hosting a convention geared towards readers and book lovers of all kinds, people were elated. The buzz surrounding the first ever Bookcon was incredible. I was lucky enough to attend the event, which offered a variety of exciting panels and activities. You could receive autographs from your favorite writers and could even snag a quick selfie with the one and only Grumpy Cat. You could listen in on panels that featured today’s top authors as well as some of the funniest comedians. Each Comic Con is essentially a real world version of Tumblr. As you push through the sea of people in the convention center, you can see every fandom under the sun represented in the form of intricate costumes, mountains of merchandise, and a full schedule of star-studded panels, screenings, and Q&A sessions. Not to mention an plethora of fangirls and fanboys. It wouldn’t be the real world version of Tumblr without them, of course.
I recently attended Comic Con for the first time in New York, and my, oh my, I’m in love. For those interested in the geektastic side of popular culture, Comic Con is the place to go. With so many people in attendance it can become a bit hectic, but being among those that feel as passionately as you do about your favorite things is well worth the madness. In an effort to help future Comic Con goers navigate this magical place with ease, I’ve come up with a few quick tips to get the most out of the convention.
