TV Character Breakups that Broke Us

How often do you get invested in a show and the characters you know belong together? And when they finally get together you cheer and bask in the glow of their new love. And then a couple episodes or seasons later something dramatic happens that breaks up your favorite couple, and all you’re left with a sense of emptiness. Here are just a few examples of TV shows with heartbreaking splits.

  1. Elena and Stefan – The Vampire Diaries

After four seasons of love and confusion, Elena and Stefan finally break up after he confronts her about her feelings for his brother, Damon. Elena spent her summer searching for Stefan after he turned off his humanity, and as a result spent a lot of time with Damon and eventually fell for him. This was a disaster for the people that prefer Stefan’s charm and humor over Damon’s bad attitude and sarcasm.

  1. Rory and Dean – Gilmore Girls

In a very similar situation, Rory and Dean break up at the annual Stars Hollow Dance Marathon when Dean decides he can no longer ignore Rory’s obvious infatuation with the town bad boy, Jess. Rory cries at a bridge but is comforted by Jess when they finally admit their feelings for each other. Some people still haven’t gotten over the fact that Rory gave up Dean’s loyalty and floppy hair.

  1. Jess and Nick – New Girl

After two seasons of building a friendship and realizing they want more, we finally got to see Jess and Nick decide to be together. But just a season later, they break up when they realize all they have in common is their love for each other. Some fans were distraught that this meant one of them would have to move out of the apartment, but the two are still friends that get into crazy situations with their roommates.

  1. Carrie and Big – Sex and the City

These two probably break up more than anyone on television. Fear of commitment is the core issue of this relationship, and we see it time and time again. With each break up, the fans never knew if it would be the last. In the first movie, Big stands up Carrie at their wedding, but they reconcile. In the second movie, Carrie shares a kiss with her ex-boyfriend Aidan and confesses to Big out of guilt. Fans were sure this was the end of Carrie and Big. But he forgives her and demonstrates that their relationship can survive anything.

  1. The Doctor and Rose – Doctor Who

In Doctor Who, we see Rose share adventures and begin to trust the Ninth Doctor, but when he regenerates into the Tenth Doctor, fans began to support their relationship even more. However, in the season 2 finale, the Rose and The Doctor are separated by parallel universes, and viewers got to watch this heart wrenching separation. To make matters worse, we get to see the two say goodbye when The Doctor projects himself into Rose’s universe as a hologram. Rose has a breakdown and admits her love for The Doctor, and when he begins to reply, his projection is cut off, leaving viewers devastated and as heartbroken as Rose.

So there you have it; just a few examples of the heartbreak viewers endure while watching their favorite shows. So next time you’re rewatching them, be sure to remember these devastating splits and keep some tissues and chocolate nearby to comfort yourself and do your best to try to keep your faith in love alive.

With Doctor Who set to premiere soon in the US and abroad, it’s time to start getting excited! And boy, does Season 9 sound like one to be excited about. Peter Capaldi proved himself enormously capable of filling the Doctor’s role, leading to a memorable eighth season, and he’s obviously back this year. Though it was touch and go for a while on whether Jenna Coleman would return, she will be back to roam the universe with the Doctor as Clara. But enough about the obvious! Let’s get into the nitty-gritty. Continue reading

Quirky Item of the Week: ‘Doctor Who’ K-9 Slippers

Do I love Doctor Who? Affirmative. That’s why I’m so excited about ThinkGeek’s line of Doctor Who merchandise, and just when I thought it couldn’t get any better? They add these K9 slippers, which will not only keep your feet warm but will also provide you with a companion for your long Doctor Who marathons.

Each slipper is fashioned to look like K9’s head and body, and it’s probably good that they emphasized the dog aspect over the robot aspect because robotic slippers don’t sound the least bit comfortable. With these K9 slippers, however, your feet are bound to be both comfortable and adorable.

And if you have friends who also like Doctor Who, go ahead and get them a pair! K9 was featured in both Classic and New Who, so it won’t matter when they started watching. Everyone knows K9!

Ready to buy a pair or two? Of course K9’s response would be “affirmative,” and yours should be too. Check out the K9 slippers at ThinkGeek to start – or continue – your Doctor Who collection.

Is the ‘Doctor Who’ revival still the same 10 years later?

I will always remember the day I met my Doctor. I was having a really bad day, and wasn’t in the mood for doing much of anything. I came home from class, plopped on the couch, turned on the TV and just started flipping channels, staring blankly at the screen. Finally, I reached channel 101, BBC America. I stopped for a moment, recognizing the show as Doctor Who, a fan-favorite on the interwebs. I saw this strange man wearing a bowtie, lanky and wide-eyed, explaining to a frightened father and son that the child’s fear of his cupboard was legitimate. You see, during his time exploring wonders of the universe beyond anyone’s wildest dreams, the Doctor had found that monsters are, indeed, real. Continue reading

Top ride ideas for the new BBC-themed amusement park

SHERLOCK (Image Credit: Hartswood Films for Masterpiece)

My first reaction to the news that a BBC-themed amusement park is in the works was pure, unadulterated excitement. My second reaction was to try and figure out exactly how much money I would need to visit the park in its proposed location of Kent, England. The answer is probably too much for a person who still hasn’t managed a visit to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Continue reading

Her Universe debuts new gifts for fangirls just in time for the holidays!

For this fangirl, shopping can be a headache. All I want is a T-shirt declaring my love for all of my favorite nerdy series, but my mother yells I should ask for “real” clothing that doesn’t have comic book logos on the front. Continue reading

Doctor Who’s The Doctor isn’t a medical doctor, but let’s follow that analogy for a moment. Imagine going to a doctor you really trust and feel comfortable with. He or she gets you through the tough times, maybe rejoices with you for the good and simply knows what to do every time you visit. You have a history with him or her. Now picture how you would feel if you had to change doctors to someone you’ve never met and can’t quite yet figure out how you feel about him or her. Your first meeting is a little awkward because you can only think about how you wish you had your good, ol’ reliable doctor back. You don’t know whether or not this new doctor will treat you well and live up to your idea of doctors, notions created because of your great experiences in the past. You need time to build trust with this new person. Continue reading

Fashion with Character: Clara Oswald of ‘Doctor Who’

Clara Oswald

I recently took a quiz called “Which Doctor Who Companion Are You?” (admit it, Whovians: you’ve all wondered this at some point). The result was the Doctor’s current travel buddy, Clara Oswald. This was pleasing but not surprising, as I’ve noticed from the time that we were first introduced to Clara that I share a fair amount of similarities with her. While she a might be a close match personality-wise, her wardrobe is admittedly way more awesome than mine. Indeed, this (not-so-impossible) girl’s clothes evoke major envy in me.

Clara’s style is a bit eclectic. She manages to strike the perfect balance between girly and edgy, all while remaining appropriately clothed for her latest adventure through space and time. She typically pairs a colorful, Peter Pan-collared A-line dress with a rugged leather jacket and ladylike stockings with combat boots.

To top off her already interesting clothing choices, she is also a huge accessory lover. When she clutches her beloved cup of tea, it’s pretty easy to spot her admirable ring collection. For this particular outfit that I’ve whipped up (like a soufflé, if you will), I picked out a bowtie ring in addition to a collection of stackable rings. I imagine it’s something Clara could enjoy wearing; after all, bowties are cool. She can often be seen wearing a charm bracelet or watch and a dainty necklace. For this look, I chose a gold leaf necklace to pay tribute to her origins and charm watch – not that it would be much help while time traveling.

Put all of these pieces together and you will look like one of the most fashionable companions ever. You’ll look so much like her, in fact, that you may begin to wonder if you’re just one of Clara’s echoes! Now all that’s left to do is pack your bags (with similarly cute outfits, obviously) and listen up for the TARDIS.

Netflix (Image Credit: Mike Petrucci)

An Open Letter to Netflix

Netflix (Image Credit: Mike Petrucci)

Netflix (Image Credit: Mike Petrucci)

Dear Netflix,

For the first few months of my subscription to you, I didn’t like you. You were a thoughtful gift from my parents, meant to fill the void left by a defunct local movie rental store and a downgraded cable package. When I first received you, I looked through your catalog of movies and felt disappointment. You offered plenty of good older films, but had a serious shortage of recent movies.

What you lacked in current films you made up for in your massive array of television shows. Pfft, I thought. Though I had been on enjoyable series binges before, I hadn’t the motivation to invest time in yet another show. I closed the Netflix page on my browser and went about my day. For months, not only did I not touch you, but I barely even thought of you (which was an awful waste of money, I know). And every time I did think about you, I thought about how I should probably just cancel the subscription. It was a relationship that I felt was destined to fail. Straight out of a romantic comedy, though, on one fateful day, my feelings for you did a 180, and I fell hard for you.

Netflix, I can’t give you all the credit for putting me under your spell. We both have BBC America to thank for that. For had I not come across and immediately fallen in love with Doctor Who last year, I would still to this day have no use for you.

But I did fall in love with Doctor Who. After randomly catching an episode on television, I was desperate for more. I searched the channel guide to find out when the show would be playing again, and to my dismay, the next scheduled reruns were all wibbly-wobbly and out of order. I felt defeated. I was ready to give my heart to a new show, but I didn’t know how to do so. And then, I remembered – you basically showcase every television show that has ever been created, so surely you offered Doctor Who. For the first time in a long time, I logged into my Netflix account (after trying a few wrong passwords first) and very happily embarked on my journey to become a Whovian. Netflix, you went from being something I thought would be totally useless into something that ruined changed my life.

After spending so much time with you, I have indeed grown to love you, even with your strange assortment of movies. You’re still not the best at keeping up-to-date with current releases, but I can tell you’re trying. Our relationship started off rocky, but honestly, now I don’t know what I’d do without you. Thank you for feeding my obsession, Netflix. I will always love you for it.

Casey

The BBC hit show Doctor Who is about to hit a milestone not many shows reach. On Saturday, Nov. 23, the show will celebrate the 50th Anniversary of its first episode. The pilot of the original series aired on Nov. 23, 1963, and the “classic” series continued to run until 1989 with a TV movie made in 1996. In 2005, the series was relaunched and has been airing since with no end in sight. Continue reading
